Are the differences between Muslims great enough to be sects like "sunni" etc?

I mean, protestants and catholics have many differences between them and use different churches and etc.

Are there really enough differences between sunni and shia to justify the use of terms like shia and sunni? We pray in the same place. We follow the same pillars. We use the same exact book.

I feel like we should get rid of those words and refer to ourselves as only Muslim.
