I came across this charity site in another forum.
Rather than donating to charity, the idea of kiva is to loan money to poor people, who are hoping to set up their own business - thereby hopefully enabling them to make a decent living and support their family, and possibly even employ others.
The money gets paid back to you eventually, and you can then loan to somebody else.
Loans are arranged through field partner groups.
Check out the site. There are many people asking for loans from any part of the world.
Here is an example, a woman from Pakistan seeking to loan money to buy a donkey cart to sell milk:
