am just lil puzzled....:? ...as usual....

wot does sheikh mean? who can have this title and how?

wot does the word Qari mean? can that be presented in a name if one has become a qari?

hafiz? do they have certain title to their name?

and how about aalims, maulana(maulvi)...are they same or different?....

wot does sheikh mean? who can have this title and how?

The word itself has several meanings and differs if used by a Muslim or a non-Muslim Arab.

The very basic definition of Sheikh is "old man" however among the non Muslims it is usualy used to mean a "Wise Man" among the Bedouins it is a tribal leader or elder. In Islam it is used as a Title for Scholars.
