During the time of ‘Umar Ibnu ‘Abdil’Azeez, a group were arrested and were on course to being punished for having consumed alcohol. It was said to ‘Umar that “one of those who was sitting with them wasn’t drinking alcohol but was in fact fasting”. ‘Umar, however, insisted to include him in the punishment. As evidence, he quoted the Ayah:
وَقَدْ نَزَّلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي الْكِتَابِ أَنْ إِذَا سَمِعْتُمْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ يُكْفَرُ بِهَا وَيُسْتَهْزَأُ بِهَا فَلَا تَقْعُدُوا مَعَهُمْ حَتَّى يَخُوضُوا فِي حَدِيثٍ غَيْرِهِ إِنَّكُمْ إِذًا مِثْلُهُمْ
“And it has already come down to you in the Book that when you hear the verses of Allah being denied and ridiculed, then do not sit with them until they enter into another conversation, for certainly in that case, you would be like them..” (Al-Qur’an)
He was sat with them as they engaged in Haraam but didn’t speak out or at least leave the gathering. Thus, as Imam Al-Qurtubi commented, “Approval of a sin is equivalent to the doing of the sin”
How relevant is this Ayah to much of what happens on social media today, where, following the sly comments of some, clear backstabbing, ill-mannered hints or their likes, others are quick to add their comments of approval.
“You show ‘em who’s boss!”
“Tell it how it is!”
“You go girl!”
Careful ..
If mere silence at the sight of sin can be classified in Allah’s Eyes as the same as the *doing* of the sin, what then about the one who actively spurs him/her on?
Before you support a post with your likes or comments, remember that sin by association is real.
