He said, "My Lord, make for me a sign." He Said, "Your sign is that you will not [be able to] speak to the people for three days except by gesture. And remember your Lord much and exalt [Him with praise] in the evening and the morning."
[Qur'aan 3:41]
Allaah told Zakariyya that he could not speak to his nation for 3 days. He was to exalt Allaah with praise, but he was forbidden from talking to his people. He could only gesture to them.
In this Verse there is indication that one cannot forsake ones Muslim brother for more than 3 days as Allaah limited the period that Zakariyya was to not talk to his people to 3 days.
The following Hadith explicitly states this:
Narrated AbuHurayrah:
The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: It is not allowable for a Muslim to keep apart from his brother for more than three days, for one who does so and dies will enter Hell.
[Sunan Abu Dawud – The Book of General Behavior – Chapter: Regarding he who abandons his Muslim brother – Hadith No. 4914]
