Do we have to say dua at the second Rakah of Fajr prayer?

I belong to the Shafi school of Sunni. I have seen my parents pray Fajr and at their second rakah after the rukuh they raise their hands to say dua and then proceed to do sujood then continues their salat (like 2 rakat witr prayer) Is this the right form?

That called dua Qunoot . Shafis do that , Hanafis do not do that but do it witr after Isha. But if you are a hanfi and follow the shafi imam since you had made a niyyat (intention ) to follow the Imaam just follow the imaam as its an Important part of the Salah .

Though hanafis say just stay idle which seems in appropriate as we have Niyat we will follow the Imaam. This will not be applicable for rafayadain (lifting hands after ruku etc) since that is less important than Qunoot, which is also a wajib for hanafis and might be a wajib or muakkadha for shafis.

The Prophet did not always pray qunoot in Fajr salah. Nowhere in the sunnah is this mentioned, rather he only did it at times of calamity.

Abu Maalik al-Ash’ari said: “I said to my father, ‘O my father, you prayed behind the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and behind Abu Bakr, ‘Umar, ‘Uthmaan and ‘Ali (may Allaah be pleased with them). Did they [all always] used to say Du’aa’ al-Qunoot in Fajr?’ He said, ‘O my son, this is a newly-invented matter.’” (Narrated by the five, apart from Abu Dawood; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in al-Irwa’, 435).

Okay I am confused. What are you actually trying to say? Do the Qunoot since I am a Shafi for the fajr prayer? Since I am supposed to do Qunoot for the fajr praye then I shouldn't be praying the witr after Isha right?

I need more light into this.
 
Witr salah is after Isha for both Shafi so pray it without missing . So see the other post with many hadiths that will be sufficient

So your parents are correct also.

This hadith shows that the Prophet :saws: did not always recite Qunut in Fajr salah. He only did it at times of hardships and oppression to pray for the Muslims who were having a very hard time. So, Qunut should not be read in every single Fajr salah because this is going further than the sunnah, which is to only perform Qunut at times of hardships. Qunut should only be prayed (all the time) in Witr. And Allah knows best.

I have another doubt. The Dua for Qunoot which is said during the Faj prayer is similar to the one said for witr right?
 
This is my understanding from what I have found and Allah knows best

Narrated Anas: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said Al-Qunut for one month after the posture of Bowing, invoking evil upon some 'Arab tribes. (Sahih Al Bukhari)

Narrated Muhammad bin Seereen: Anas was asked, "Did the Prophet (ﷺ) recite Qunut in the Fajr prayer?" Anas replied in the affirmative. He was further asked, "Did he recite Qunut before bowing?" Anas replied, "He recited Qunut after bowing for some time (for one month)." (Sahih Al Bukhari)

Narrated Anas:The Prophet (ﷺ) said Al-Qunut after Bowing (i.e. Ar-Ruku') for one month, invoking evil upon (the tribes of) Ril and Dhakwan. He used to say, "Usaiya disobeyed Allah and His Apostle." (Sahih Al Bukhari)

The Qunut after bowing is during fajr salah, when the Prophet sallallahu 'alayhi wa salaam made supplication against tribes who had killed muslims unjustly. He did this for one month.


It was narrated from Ubayy bin Ka’b that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to pray Witr and he would recite Qunut before Ruku’. (Sunan Ibn Majah)

Narrated `Asim:I asked Anas bin Malik about the Qunut. Anas replied, "Definitely it was (recited)". I asked, "Before bowing or after it?" Anas replied, "Before bowing." I added, "So and so has told me that you had informed him that it had been after bowing." Anas said, "He told an untruth (i.e. "was mistaken," according to the Hijazi dialect). Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) recited Qunut after bowing for a period of one month." Anas added, "The Prophet (ﷺ) sent about seventy men (who knew the Qur'an by heart) towards the pagans (of Najd) who were less than they in number and there was a peace treaty between them and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) (but the Pagans broke the treaty and killed the seventy men). So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) recited Qunut for a period of one month asking Allah to punish them." (Sahih al Bukhari)

The Qunut before bowing is during Witr salah, different from the Qunut at fajr.

Qunut during Witr, before bowing

It was narrated that Al-Hasan bin ‘Ali said:“My grandfather, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), taught me some words to say in Qunut of Witr: Allahumma ‘afini fiman ‘afait, wa tawallani fiman tawallait, wahdini fiman hadait, wa qini sharra ma qadait, wa barik li fima a’tait. Innaka taqdi wa la yuqda ‘alaik, innahu la yudhillu man walait. Subhanaka rabbana tabarakta wa ta’alait (O Allah, pardon me along with those whom You have pardoned, be an ally to me along with those whom You are an ally to, guide me along with those whom You have guided, protect me from the evil that You have decreed, and bless for me that which You have bestowed. For verily You decree and none can decree over You. He whom You support can never be humiliated. Glory is to You, our Lord, You are Blessed and Exalted).” (Sunan Ibn Majah)
