Etiquette and manners of eating

Question though, I sometimes waste food by placing my unfinished food on the side of the dish but I don't throw them into the dustbin. I left it there to either be cleaned or save to feed the birds. I justify my action by the hadeeth of the prophet :saws:, "Allah's Messenger (SAW)| never found fault with any food. If he desired it, he would eat it. If he disliked it, he would leave it." (Al-Bukhari).
