Authors aren't mentioned for any of the Gospels. The early Church Fathers provide us with this information. Traditionally, the Church has always accepted St. John the Apostle as the author.

According tot he Vatican II document: DEI VERBUM (DOGMATIC CONSTITUTION ON DIVINE REVELATION)

The Catholic Church (and I believe also the Orthodox church) accept this faithfully because we believe that Christ said, "And I say to you: That you are Peter (Peter means rock); and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever you shall bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever you shall loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.

Except it is generally accepted the name John was the pseudonym of several authors and it is most likely the Apostle John was long deceased before the books of John 2, John 3 and Revelations were written.

Greetings and peace be with you brother Woodrow,

I know we have our differences, which we may never agree on. But it is old threads like this, which remind us of our dear departed agnostic sister snakelegs, may she rest in peace.

She is still running in our hearts, and when I think of all our differences, I hope and pray that we might all find salvation

In the spirit of praying for justice, peace and salvation for all people.

Eric

Peace Eric,

I agree. Thanks for the reminder.

According to tests on scriptures, John is likely to have been alive when they were written, but I feel that this is straying too far away from the thread, so I'll just agree to disagree.
