He was a british citizen and he was became part of the Civil Service of Sarawak (autonomous territory of the Sultanate of Borneo) in 1920 and he played a role in the negotiations between the ethnic groups in the '20. He was inside the the higher ranks of the state governor Brooke (Rajah white) but later he fled to Australia and then returned again in Sarawak in the '30s where he returned to Islam and married a Malaysian in Singapore. Later he returned to Sarawak in the early '40s and became a close adviser of Charles Vyner Brooke absolute last rajah of Borneo. Relations with the British were always so many negative. He has been arrested by the British for reasons still not fully understood but it has been said because "mentally unstable" for his plans for a large Muslim nation in the South Pacific.

It would seem his mental health problems were real enough. In fact there were many witnesses in several countries to his erratic and sometimes alarming behaviour. On the boat to Singapore for instance he managed to throw the ship's charts and navigational instruments overboard. He also had a previous record of mental problems. Prior to this event he had - voluntarily - admitted himself to a mental hospital in Epsom, England on two previous occasions.
