A federal judge has ordered internet search engine Google to turn over some search data, including 50,000 web addresses, to the US government.

However, Judge James Ware denied a request that Google hand over a list of people's search requests.

The Justice Department had wanted access to search records to help prevent access to online pornography.

The judge said privacy considerations led him to deny part of the department's request.

"This concern, combined with the prevalence of internet searches for sexually explicit material, gives this court pause as to whether the search queries themselves may constitute potentially sensitive information," he said in his ruling.

Google lawyer Nicole Wong said it was reassuring that the judge's decision had "sent a clear message about privacy".

"What his ruling means is that neither the government nor anyone else has carte blanche when demanding data from internet companies," she said.

Public perceptions

The ruling said the request for 50,000 web addresses, or URLs, was relevant for use in a statistical study the government is undertaking to defend the constitutionality of its child anti-pornography law.

Earlier, the government had reduced its request to just 50,000 web addresses and roughly 5,000 search terms from the millions or potentially billions of addresses it had initially sought.

"The expectation of privacy by some Google users may not be reasonable," Judge Ware wrote, "but may nonetheless have an appreciable impact on the way in which Google is perceived, and consequently the frequency with which users use Google."

The case has focused attention on the issue of personal information held by internet companies.

The US Government is seeking to defend the 1998 Child Online Protection Act, which has been blocked by the Supreme Court because of legal challenges over how it is enforced.

It wants the data from the search engines to prove how easy it is to stumble over porn on the net.

Three of Google's competitors in internet search technology - AOL, Yahoo and MSN - have complied with subpoenas in the case.

Salaam

Why do I get the feeling theres something more sinister going on?

Google already helps the authorities with the "Child Abuse" - Handing over complete database is nothing more than targetting Muslims.

If that is the case...
If they have nothing to hide they have nothing to fear.

its about privacy - which is being invaded. How would you feel if some stranger(s) come and start living with you.

I don't believe there is room for such thing as "privacy" in the world we live in today and living now is only going to get more controlled.
personaly I am all for goverments using what ever means they can to combat any kind of crime, they are paid to protect us.

I don't have anything to hide at all, so I wouldn't mind any kind of snooping.
I know some people feel different to me so if people don't like the heat its best to get out of the fire.

Cant disagree with your opinion, however each individual has its own.

Its like this:
If i am talking to my wife (note: I am not married or engaged etc :okay:) something personal, I would not want anyone to hear what i am saying to her. Even if its not something personal, I do not want anyone tapping, checking my previous searches, what I cook etc...

At my Home, no uninvited guest is allowed. - Once I go out on the streets - even then, There should be very limited surveyllance.

Yes, I agree that Big-Brother is going to exist very soon, if not already.

and I can't disagree with your opinion either..

you mention tapping this is already happening...I don't mean suspected terroristis etc...but everyday people...if certain words are mentioned on mobiles....they are intercepted...by you know who... :)
has for previous searches on our pc's...this is how Gary Glitter (child porn) was found out..and a good thing too...he ended up in jail...and back there again now..
I thing we must weigh the pros and cons..
I think there are lots of things going on out there...survaliance etc that we don't even know about.

I agree the whole world is becoming paranoid...but I feel it isn't without good reason. It is a shame that people do live in fear, that going about their own business, could get you blown up or kidnapped, be-headed.
Worrying about what kind of person is caring for you Children while not in your charge.
These things are fact and an everyday occurance all over the world.. I chose not to bury my head in the sand.
fear no...on my guard yes.
