It's great you are taking all these initiatives and challenges. I just hope you are not the type to take on a challenge just because someone issued a challenge. People are taking tide challenges here in the US and are ending up in the ER (emergency room).

Hi.

Last Tuesday, I was at the International Café were residents of my town regularly meet up with the Syrian families. We ended up talking about what the Hijab means. The Syrian families said as well as wearing them for modesty and being closer to God, they also said that it makes them safe.

Coming to think of for myself, as well as making me closer to God, I do feel more protected by wearing the Hijab.
 
I know some non-Muslim girls have worn hijab for self protection from sexual harassment, especially those well endowed.
 
Okay i want to say smthing. The hijab doesnt protect from harassment. Its a sign of modesty and commitment to god. But to say the hijab prevents harassment is a stretch tbh, i mean look at sisters who are covered head to toe and still get harassed?
 
While your point is valid, however, the Quran does state that you will be recognized as Muslimah and will not be harassed.

"...That will be better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed..." [33.59]

And that was the case for most of history. People knew you do not mess with a Muslim woman (recognized by her hijab). And even today, while it may not be true for 100% of the time, but for the most part it does deter others from acting undignified before a hijabi as opposed to a non hijabi. For example, how many hijabis do you see being "checked" out and being hit on?

Of course, it doesn't always deter and there are reasons for that.

1. the hijabi's own attitude and behavior. Is it just a cloth on her head or does she wear the hijab in her actions as well?

2. the islamphobia and hate of Muslims. Such are the times today that the islamphobes single out hijabis and attack them because they are too cowardly to mess with a Muslim man.

3. the lack of Muslim body to protect the Muslims. When the europeans tried mocking the prophet :saws: or Islam, the Islamic caliphate warned of invasion if they don't stop. And they did for fear of retaliation. And today? one country prints cartoons, the others follow suit to "support" their so called "freedom of speech".

Even with the given above situation of the Muslims, the hijab still offers protection and deterrence from unwanted attention for many Muslims and non-Muslims who implement it and see the results of it themselves.

Sure but lets not all put the blame on what a woman's wearing for her being harrassed. At the end of the day we should all lower our gaze from each other.

Very good and informative post.

Also today, I saw the Syrian Family the that said they were offended by my wearing the Hijab. Once I had explained that I was Catholic and that Catholics used to wear Headscarves around 40 years ago and that I was challenged by another Syrian family to wear a Hijab for year, this changed their attitude to me.

I was also asked about how often a Catholic prays. Catholics are taught to pray as often as they can during the day whenever I can.

I like to pray when I get up, just before a meal and at night. Sometimes I pray four prayers in a day, sometimes five prayers and sometimes more.
 
Hi. Just recently, another refugee family arrived and this family is completely against me wearing the Hijab, even though I told them the reason I was wearing one. This means that when I go to the International Café, I won't be able to wear the Hijab as it will completely offend the new refugee family.

Personally, I don't want to give the challenge, but with this new refugee family, I can't wear the Hijab locally. I can still wear when I travel to different towns and cities.

Also, I don't feel right when I'm not wearing the Hijab as I feel that something is missing and also not as close to God as I would like.

The Syrian Family that originally challenged me are impressed for who long I've been wearing the Hijab.

I dont see why theyre getting offended. All religions have some form of head covering so why should a hijab be unnaceptable on a non muslim woman.

Tell them hijab is part of many different religions and culture and not just Muslims. Even Mary, mother of Jesus, wore hijab.
