I want a rough figure but I was doing some research when I found this:
[h=1]30,651 committed suicide in 2011, NPA reports[/h] National Jun. 09, 2012 - 06:22PM JST ( 57 )

TOKYO —
The number of people who took their own lives in Japan in 2011 was 30,651, the 14th consecutive year the figure has exceeded 30,000, the National Police Agency said in a white paper released Friday.
However, the NPA said the figure was down 1,039 from 2010.
The white paper said there was a spike in suicides between April and June following the March 11 disaster, Sankei Shimbun reported. In May last year, 3,375 people killed themselves, more than 20% up on the same month a year earlier.
“The whole of Japanese society was anxious after the disaster, and we suspect that to be a contributing factor,” said an official of the Cabinet Office, adding suicides in May were particularly high among men in their 30s.
Last March’s quake and tsunami, which claimed 19,000 lives and sparked the world’s worst nuclear crisis in a generation, greatly hampered the Japanese economy and led to a surge in corporate bankruptcies. Police said this contributed to an increase in the number of suicides among people who were unable to find new jobs.
The white paper also said that 1,029 students committed suicide in 2011, the first time that the number has surpassed 1,000 since research data started being kept in 1978.
Japan has one of the world’s highest suicide rates, according to the OECD.

I mean 30K in Japan alone.. it is rather frightening
how many do yearly over the globe though is what I'd like to know, if you can find me a rough number I'd appreciate it...

found this table at wiki so I guess now we know.. sob7an Allah- but these are the ones reported I guess it would be much more.

It is strange the reasons listed for suicide that I have read, and the programs made to prevent them, is sort of like lip service no? Obviously folks need a solution to the actual problem not a helpline to talk about it.
I was surprised with Kazakhstan being so high up there.. aren't they >70% Muslims.. why such a high suicide rate amongst Muslims?

:w:

mental illnessess, somatoform disorders, organic diseases etc etc. Life is not pleasant to endure. some ppl decide that's it.

Mental illness is a reason but it's mostly financial and lack of positive and or meaningful relationships!
Notice Muslim majority countries have very low suicide rate so I wonder what makes khazkistan so unique!

I would not look much into it. Its low because its a stigma for Muslims to have relative commit suicide and hence is not reported such. Just like how organic diseases are common among humanity regardless of their religion, suicide is supposed to be similar across humanity, regardless of their religion.

In America: I hate myself and I want to die.

In Indonesia: I want to commit suicide but I'm afraid to die.

This is why suicide rate in Indonesia is lower than in America.

If suicide is similar then why do we have ranking of countries with highest rates?
Sure many cases go unreported but it's not up to the family but the state to report cause if death at the coroner's office!
Just a thought and the findings do report that most causes are desperation because of a financial situation, failure, bankruptcy or troubling relations!
People who are mentally ill hardly have the capabilities to execute it well of course many do but it's usually a planned process!

Today i watch the news it says 5 people commit suicide in Japan, they belong to the same family :hmm:

I guess one reason is religion. When you are at the peak of disappointment, its your relationship and trust on your God that brings you back, give you hope and courage and encourage you to step forward.

I think it's tremendously difficult to compare across countries because of different social factors and because they collect data in such different ways. Within a particular country (eg the UK and Ireland) there are some interesting patterns. The highest rates of suicide are in two professions: farming and medicine. The reason is the same in both cases - access to a convenient method. Farmers often have guns, while medical workers and dentists have access to drugs (and the knowledge of how to use them).

This suggests that for many potential victims, if they could just be helped through their darkest hours, then they might afterwards recover the will to live.

wow this is a big number. Imagine these people if they believed in Allah SWT and His mercy and reward for being a believer. We muslims have a lot to do. These people needs dawah, someone to talk to them and let them know about the creator. May Allah forgive us for our shortcomings and make us a source to bring guidance to atleast one person. Only if we knew the benefit of giving dawa.
