Assalamualaikum,

I want your advice on what it takes to become an Islamic scholar? How long does it take usually? does it take years and years or a lifetime? and is it possible?

What needs to be done? studying in the best Islamic university or studying privately under highly knowledgeable scholars?

Asalaamu Alaikum, well it depends what is available in your area of within your vicinity. There are also some good online Aalim courses nowadays like Shariahprogram.ca Ask around your area and speak to your local Masjids and sisters in your vicinity as they may further advise you on what is available within your reach. We should all desire to have knowledge as those with knowledge are far superiour than those without it as long as they are sincere and try their utmost to implement and share what they learn. Knowledge is a blessing but it can also be a source of ruin for those who abused it or did not make good use of it.

If you need any help trying to locate any courses within you area then please let us know inshallah but in the meanwhile check out shariahprogram.ca.

Assalamualaikum.

Just want to add something. There is no any Islamic school/course that automatically make us become Ulama.

Aalim (Ulama) is not academic title, but honorary title that given by people and especially other ulama to knowledgeable Muslim who active in share his knowledge among ummah. So, if we want to be ulama, we must teach our knowledge to ummah. If we never teach ummah, our title is only "someone who graduated from Islamic school/course". Of course, we need learn and have high knowledge before we teach people.

Thanks for the link brother. looks like a good website to learn Arabic. JazakAllah khair

From what I've read and heard, it takes a lifetime. Ways of doing are both the ones you mentioned; Islamic universities supplemented by private specialist one-on-one tuition by the senior scholars. The real scholars are not on youtube, they have no website... you have to find them. You cannot become an 'Aalim by attending one of these "Darul 'Ulooms" and coming out six years later as a self proclaimed 'Aalim as so many do. It takes a lifetime to acquire the wisdom and understanding of our scholars; not just absorbing information. I've also heard of a one year "Mufti course"!

If you are sincere, then Allaah will facilitate it for you insha'Allaah. I've heard countless number of times, that Arabic is (one of many) keys to unlock the doors of knowledge.

yes I have contacted the local mosques to find me a highly knowledgeable scholar who is willing to teach. I have a question btw, what about the people who are graduated from Al Azhar? can they be called scholars?

and I completely agree with your last line "If you are sincere, then Allaah will facilitate it for you insha'Allaah" Thats what I believe, Allah will make it easy for me InshAllah

Why shouldn't they? Al-azhar has been producing scholars and students of knowledge for almost a thousand years.

another question brother, you said "The real scholars are not on youtube, they have no website". so what about ahmed deedat and dr zakir naik, arent they good scholars?

Asalaamu alaikum it is incorrect and arrogant to say that "real scholars are not on youtube". There are many good scholars whos lectures have been uploaded onto youtube and are benefitting many.

Regarding Sheikh Ahmed Deedat and Dr Zakr Naik then they are not Islamic scholars so have no authority to issue Islamic verdicts and fatwas etc but they are scholars of comparitive religion. Therefore they should not be referred to when enquiring about any Islamic matter.

And Allah knows best in all matters
