sometimes you hear stories about people that are going through troubles and to advice them, you need to find out what the cause of their problems are. so im wondering, what kind of questions and how should you go about asking to figure out the root of the problem so that you can advice one accordingly.

Why not just ask them what the problem is? I'm sure they will know :p

^becuase sometimes people get really defensive about their problems, plus it could be considered as offensive if you asked up-straight.

It is very easy if the person concern is in front of you. Man needs attention and a listening ear, he will speak up. We should give them attention, time and a listening ear. This is my experience. People nowadays are very busy and do not want to listen others problems. That is why person in trouble hasitate to speak up.

The person whose having problems wont tell you anything until they feel comfortable around you...

You cant just step up and say 'foulan! what the problem is??' rather you should build up their confidence in you that you're there to help and listen

:sl: Maybe it's best not to try to get to the root of the problem even though you have the best intentions. Not everyone wants their 'roots' exposed. Just say you are there if they want to talk about it. That's usually encouraging to hear. :)

The best way to open up a person is to be there for them. When one is experiencing a trial they may feel lonely or abandoned. Accompany them as much as you can, advise them, be in your best behaviour with them and above all be patient with them. It may take some time to open up but give that person the time and space they need and eventually they will let their heart out at you inshaa'Allah.
