I have a half brother that shares with me, the same father. My half brother is having a kid, I read that if he has a daughter then she is my mahram, however I don't know if his mother is my mahram. I searched about this question on Google and asked in --------------, I didn't get any response. imsad

Asalaamu Alaikum,

A step son will always remain a Mahram for the step mother, even after the death of the father (Fataawa Mahmoodiyah V28 P107). If there is fear of Fitnah then the stepson and stepmother should not be alone and should not travel together without the presence of another Mahram.

And Allah Ta’aala knows best.

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.

My half brother's mother isn't my step mother, neither do I have a step mother.

So in your initial question are you referring to your half brothers Mother who is your Fathers other wife? If so then yes, you are from the unmarriageable kin (mahram) of your Father’s wife.

Sons cannot marry their father’s wives, and consequently, they are considered to be from their unmarriageable kin. Allah Most High says, “And marry not those women whom your fathers married.” [4:22]

No, no. My dad isn't Muslim, my half brother's mother is my dad's ex wife which he married before my mother, when he met my mother he had already divorced with my half brother's mother.

I believe you are her mahram through marriage. Any woman your father married becomes mahram to you through marriage.

“And marry not those women whom your fathers married.” [4:22]

[h=3]Mahrams by marriage[/h] A woman’s mahrams by marriage are those whom it is forever forbidden to marry, such as the father’s wife, the son’s wife or the wife’s mother. (Sharh al-Muntaha, 3/7)

The mahram by marriage of the father’s wife is his son from another wife, for the wife of the son it is his father, and for the mother of the wife it is the husband. Allah says in Surah al-Nur (interpretation of the meaning):

“… and not to reveal their adornment except to their husbands, or their fathers, or their husband’s fathers, or their sons, or their husband’s sons…” [al-Noor 24:31].

Their husband’s fathers and their husband’s sons are mahrams of the woman by marriage. Allah mentioned them along with their (the women’s own) fathers and sons, and made them all the same in the sense that women may display their adornments in front of them. (Al-Mughni, 6/555)
