We should remember that Allaah سبحانه وتعالى is the most Merciful and Compassionate, and we must never despair of His mercy. He likes the sinner to seek His forgiveness and repent to Him, but the shaytan likes it when despair fills a person’s heart and prevents him from repenting and turning to Allah. It was said to
al-Hasan:
Shouldn’t one of us feel too shy to ask his Lord to forgive his sin, then do it again, then ask for forgiveness, then do it again? He said: The Shaytaan wishes that you would have this attitude, so do not tire of asking for forgiveness.
Islam teaches us to have a good opinion of Allaah سبحانه وتعالى. So think that Allaah will honour you, have mercy on you and give you happiness in this world and in the Hereafter, because He loves His righteous slaves, and honours His pious slaves.
Ibn Abi Shaybah (7/105) narrated with a saheeh isnaad from Ibn Mas‘ood who said:
Verily Allah grants worldly gain to those whom He loves and those whom He does not love, but He does not grant faith to anyone except those whom He loves. If Allah loves a person, He grants him faith.
It was narrated that ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
“Some prisoners were brought to the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم,and there was a woman among the prisoners who was searching (for her child). When she found her child she embraced him and put him to her breast. The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said to us, ‘Do you think that this woman would throw her child in the fire?’ We said, ‘No, by Allah, not if she is able not to.’ The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, ‘Allah is more merciful to His slaves than this woman is to her child.’”(Agreed upon)
Yes, eemaan does increase and decrease, so strive to do those things which will help increase your eemaan. Read the Qur'an, make du'a and remember Allaah, keep good company, listen to beneficial lectures, etc.
No matter how great or how many one's sins, they can never be greater than the forgiveness and mercy of the Compassionate, the Merciful, the Forgiving, the Oft-Relenting. So don't give up and never stop turning back to Allaah. Allaah سبحانه وتعالى says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Say: ‘O ‘Ibaadi (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allaah, verily, Allaah forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft‑Forgiving, Most Merciful’” [al-Zumar 39:53]
On the authority of Anas (RadhiyAllahu ‘anhu) who said:I heard the Messenger of Allah (SallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) say,
“Allah the Almighty has said: ‘O Son of Adam, as long as you invoke Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O Son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and you then asked forgiveness from Me, I would forgive you. O Son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the Earth, and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great as it [too].’ ” [Reported by Tirmidhi who said it is a hasan sahih hadith]
One of the important lessons from this last hadith is the importance of Tawheed (affirmation of the Oneness of Allah). The key to forgiveness is adhering to Tawheed and avoiding any form of Shirk.
So, brother, strengthen your resolve and make du'a to Allaah سبحانه وتعالى to keep you steadfast and overcome all of your weaknesses. May Allaah سبحانه وتعالى make it easy for you and all Muslims, forgive us and keep us steadfast, Aameen.
