We have it in the Holy Qur'an, Surat Baqra, where our Lord stated: --
''And certainly We shall test you with something of fear,
hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits. But give glad tidings
to the patient those who, when afflicted with calamity, say:
'Truly to Allah we belong, and truly, to Him we shall return'.
They are those upon whom are blessings from their Lord.'' (2:155-157)
For Sheikh Ibn Arabi, may Allah sanctify his secret, every hardship is a tajalli, a manifestation through which Allah reveals His Names; wisdom; and His Presence within the heart of the servant. Every trial is an encounter with a Divine Face/Name.... so that fear descends from the Name al-Qahar (the overwhelming One); hunger arises from al-Qadir (the All-Powerful); who withholds and grants as He wills. Loss unveils al-Mani (the Withholder) and al-Khafid (the Abaser).... And Mercy and Guidance come from al-Rahman, al-Rahim, and al-Hadi.
Every event is a mirror of a Name of God; the knower sees the One who manifests; while the unknowing sees only the manifestation. For our Sheikh, the purpose of trial(s) is to awaken the servant into perceiving the One who acts behind all forms -- Allahu, Tabaraka Wa Ta'ala. At the end, we note that fear as a test, trains the heart to rely on Allah. Hunger refines trust and loss cultivates surrender. Calamity awakens nearness.
