what is ijtihad?

ijtihad refers to when one uses their own reasoning to arrive at an Islamic ruling. In Islam, the sources for Islamic rulings are derived in this order:

-First we consult the Qur'an
-If the ruling is not specified in the Qur'an, we seek clarification in the Sunnah (way) of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon Him)
-If it is not specified in the Sunnah, we follow the Ijmaa (consensus )of the early Islamic generations, and then the consensus of Islamic scholars
-lastly, we may use our personal Ijtihad (reasoning) and use logic to clarify the issue

and what was Irshad Manji saying anyway in CNN?

Irshad Manji has no understanding of Islam, so most likely she was speaking nothing of importance. We should ignore those who make loud noise but have little knowledge.
