Islamic views on the soul and the problem of evil.

Assalaamu Alaykum

I suppose I have two questions. What are Islamic views on the soul and the problem of evil?

In regards to the soul, where does it come from? Does Allah (SWT) create a new soul every at every conception? Wikipedia does not say much about it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soul#Islam

Also, the problem of evil is a philosophical question which asks why there is evil in the world if God is omnipotent and omnibenevolent. Does evil exist to test humanity? Wikipedia does not say much about Islamic views on this either. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Problem_of_evil#Islam

My duas go out for all the victims of the tragic landslide in Afghanistan. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un

Allah :swt: says about the soul:

وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الرُّوحِ Û– قُلِ الرُّوحُ مِنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّي وَمَا أُوتِيتُم مِّنَ الْعِلْمِ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا [الإسراء:85]Ù€​

They ask thee concerning the Spirit (of inspiration). Say: "The Spirit (cometh) by command of my Lord: of knowledge it is only a little that is communicated to you, (O men!)" [17:85]
