Looking for meaning of arabic dua

I went to a islamic lecture - heard the guy say when he started something like..

"Alhamdulillahi wassalat wassalamu ala rasoolillah, Amma Ba'd"

Im guessing its a greeting or a dua ( or both) was wondering if anyone knew exactly what it meant.

Also was wondering if someone starts talking about islam do they have to start in this matter or are there other greetings / duas that can be said. When the person finishes speaking what dua / greeting do they say in arabic? (with translation if could say)

he said (thanks be to Allah, greetings to the prophet of Allah, and now we proceed), "Amma ba'ad" means to follow with or to proceed with a topic--
you can start a letter this way or a lecture but I don't think it is exclusively to an islamic topic...
