Hi, My name is Joseph. I'm from North America. I became interested in Islam since i looked into it around the age of 16 I'm 26 now. I know there is only one God. I come here for understanding.

Well I believe in one god (Allah). It's just hard when your brought up in a world with every distraction placed before me. When our sole reason is to live for him. That's what I strive for.

Peace be upon you Joseph,

Welcome to the Forum. You are right, this world is full of distractions, but we must strive to find and live our purpose.

Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment
and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children
- like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers;
then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris.
And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval.
And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.
Quran 57:22

I would advice that you continue your journey, and constantly ask Allah, the One and True God, to guide you to his Path. Make this prayer constantly.

May Allah :swt: guide you to find and live your purpose. Ameen

Distractions will always be there. This is something which the earliest Muslims were aware of as well. In our age, we have too many of them and they can be overwhelming. Just remember to keep Allah in your heart, and never forget that He is watching over you. If it is sin you are worried about, then if you catch whiff of yourself having done something wrong, or you are about to do it, then remind yourself of Allah and say Istighfaar. That is about all you can do.

As for learning about Islam, I would advise you to look up books on Islam that you can download, and read up on the practices of Muslims and learn the basics of the five pillars and the six articles of faith, and then try to learn more about these.
 
Can't distraction come from anywhere? It can come from your own mind too, you know, or from one person sitting next to you. In the end sometimes you just have to...make a decision, I guess. What knowledge do you think you need specifically?

Salam Joseph,

In life in nonMuslim and even Muslim countries, there are many institutional and systematic barriers for our ability to practice Islam along with our own personal weaknesses. Today, we are going against the tthe flow. If you feel frustrated by your environment, know that even the best Muslims have felt the same if not worst environments (ie slavery and oppression). Practicing is always a state of becoming. Most of us here I wouldn't doubt feel the pressure of an environemnt like yours. So don't feel overwhelmed. With time and change within yourself and change within the institutions/community around us, it will get easier inshallah :).
Believing in one God, Allah (swt) is tawheed, and it is what is your heart. The choice of belief is always between your heart and God. There is so much in your control, if you can change that to strengthen your relationship with God, that is best. Other things are not.

Assalaam alaikum warhamatullahi wabarkatuhu and welcome to IB forum bro Joseph (that's Yusuf in Arabic by the way, a very well loved and honoured name, also afforded to Prophet Joseph / Yusuf (peace be upon him) :))

Bro, you got interested in Islam at the age of 16, WOW, that's young! How did you get interested in it? :)

At the age of 26 you believe in 1 God, not 2, not 3, not 300, not 3000.... but 1. Now that's something, because some people who don't get the gift of guidance, won't be able to follow the correct train of thought and deduce that there can only be 1... not none, not 2 not 3 etc. This process of deduction, is a God given gift, and most people do not know how to use it. They fail miserably and only use it for material gain. Not spiritual gain.

So, you recognise that the material world is a distraction, but has it's uses (food, water, clothing, shelter) and you value good friendships, meaningful conversation and have a will to grow spiritually in order to please God and be one of his loved.

I have a few questions bro Joseph, if I may?

1) do you believe in angels? do you believe that God created them and they do HIS will and do not fall into error (ie the concept of fallen angels is not validated in Islamic theology)
2) do you believe in the Prophets (peace be upon them), all of them?
3) do you believe in the books of God? ie: that God sent scripture to man so that he may be guided, and that the last and final book of God, is the Quran, which replaces that which comes before?
4) do you believe in Muhammad pbuh, as the last messenger and prophet, and servant of Allah?
5) Do you believe in the "day of judgement" and that each soul will be judged for its deeds?
6) Do you believe in pre-destiny and pre-knowledge? Ie: the belief that God everything is known by God and that everything has already been planned by God.

I know some of these questions may be a little heavy for you to answer in your intro thread, sorry for that. I just am too curious really? And I'd like to help i any way I can, so I thought it might be a good thing to just ask questions so I can understand you better, in sha Allah (if God wills) :)

Scimitar yes I believe all that. How I came unto it is I was 16 locked up in a state boy school that had a pastor that would let us check out religious books and the like so I checked out When the Moon Split. And the Holy Qu'ran I read about Mohammed peace be upon him in when the moon splits and parts of the Qu'ran. I was intrigued and have wanted to learn more.
