If someone let's say wants to create and launch Web site like Facebook, for example, how is it done?

Coding...coding...hours of coding! Or if you have the application already written, then host it on a server and have a public IP address from an ISP so that it is accessible.

You can buy "ready to use" website that complete with domain and host through companies that sell websites. There are many templates that you can choose there.

Or you can create your website with web editor program like NVU, then you buy domain and host it to the server.

But actually the most popular website for internet marketer is self-hosted wordpress. You can buy domain and hosting from web hosting companies. Then the company will gives you access to cPanel where you can install wordpress through Softaculous. There are thousands themes for wordpress, from free themes to premium themes.

Beside wordpress, you can use Joomla.

Another alternative to build a website is Blogspot. Even Blogspot is easier to designed because its html codes are located in single section, not shared in many sections like in wordpress.

----

I use self-hosted wordpress for my commercial websites. But I use Blogspot for my "just for fun" websites.

I do not care with the contents of those "just for fun" Blogspot websites. What I do with those websites is just install a template, analysis its html codes, learn how those codes work, and change some html codes to modify the template appearance.

Then I remove that modified template, install the new template, analysis, learn, and modify again. I do it just for fun ..... while learn html codes :D I hope I will able to design templates.

Honestly, I learned about it only from internet.

:sl: there are a lot of deals on the net which provide bandwidth etc2 when buying a server. I don't understand that, what is the best the best deal? What are servers really for? Is it like a hard disk drive for our website?

+1 for using free software like wordpress, joomla, drupal etc. If you have a basic idea for a site, you can choose a package and then mould it into what you want (through learning). I don't recommend coding from scratch for complex sites.

It's somewhere your site is stored and accessed from. You can use a home pc but it's unlikely you'll have the bandwidth to handle a popular site, not to mention electricity costs when compared with hosting.

Server is not space to store your website data like contents or installed programs. But like bro Dagless mentioned, server is place where your site stored and accessed from. You can store your site in server in Malaysia, or in America, or in other countries. Depend on available option.

About bandwidth. I give you an analogy. You have a small restaurant with 10 tables for 40 visitors. This capacity for visitors is bandwidth. Then visitors come and use 5 tables, it's means your 'bandwidth' have been used in half capacity. And if your restaurant have many visitors, of course you must add the tables into 15 or 20. Same like if your website has many visitors, you need to add the bandwidth.

How to deal with bandwidth that offered by hosting companies ?. You can chose small, medium, or large bandwidth depend on prediction of how many visitors will visit your website. Or you can start with the small, then if you get many visitors you can upgrade it to larger capacity.

i did something with the coding part (around 4yrs back)... to make my blog look like a website than a blog...
http://islamic-forum-avatars.blogspot.com/
Then around... 2010.. i bought a domain.. and linked it to blog... later i removed due to SEO reasons i think....(forgot why i removed)

Just type islamic avatars... in Google or Yahoo... my blog will be ranked at the top :statisfie Alhamdulillah.
After getting into myjob... didnt try much on it... but still... it has around 5 hits daily... i am satisfied...:)

http://www.godaddy.com/ - one of the famous web service provider
Buy domain(u need to pay for it yearly basis)... buy hosting space(usually u need to pay monthly for it)... and pay them to design ur site as per ur requirement or u put in ur own code in there... thats it.

This sounds really complicated. Allah has blessed me with an amazing idea, and I have faith it can turn out very successful, inshaAllah. but everything sounds so complicated. What if I just tell you what kind of site I want, what I want the site to look like etc. and you tell me how to do it, please? will it be easier that way, maybe?

Or should I just learn coding and ask help from my information technology professor? :/

Yes, why not? maybe it would be easier to implement that idea that way...

But is it possible to make a site, which looks the way I want? I don't want any ready wordpress designs.

Yes. And or from forms to database or even a complicated application to do a specific task to it's visitors, anything can be coded. :p:

Today morning I HTML coded a simple web-site, just with some text, colors, headings, font size and styles..

Coding...coding...hours of coding! Or if you have the application already written, then host it on a server and have a public IP address from an ISP so that it is accessible.
Okay, now I know what you mean. -_- I just looked at the HTML code of some sites, and realized what I'm dealing with.

But I still have the idea Allah blessed me with, al-hamdulillah. It's something really awesome, and I have trust and faith it can be very successful, inshaAllah. People would love it inshaAllah... I know what kind of a site I want, but how I don't know.... It's not a simple site, people should have there profiles, user names, and be able to write and comment as well.

CMS Joomla and JoomSocial those are pretty good starters I use them for a couple Social Media sites
