How do optical illusions work? they're so confusing :X :?

:sl:

There are many factors that cause us to see optical illusions. some are cultural based upon what we have seen in the past so we anticipate movement and perceive movement were ther is no. another facto is we have stereo-optic vision and try to see all things in 3 dimensions even though they are 2 dimensional. May illusions can not be seen if we close one eye.

There are also things like retinal fatigue and involuntary eye movement that cause other types of illusions. Oddly there seems to be a correlation between the types of illusions a person sees and the persons intelligence. Back in the 1960s I and a few others tried to design an unbiased IQ test based on the illusions a person sees we did find that generally the higher IQ a person has the more illusions they can see. But we never could nail down a measurable and replicable correlation to design a valid test.

The cat is actually not rotating, it is moving back and forth. we are anticipating rotation so we don't catch the flipping back and forth. If you know it is just simply rapidly mocing back and forth with a slight pause at the side motion, you should be able to notice the flipping. If you stare at the left side it will appear to move in one direction and if you stare at the right side it will seem to rotate in the opposite direction. If you concentrate on the center it will seem to randomly change direction.

Omg really, Subhaan`Allaah!

Thats kinda kool Jazakallahu Khaayr for the explanation, *checks it out again* : D

I can only see the cat revolving one way- anti-clockwise. Try as I might, I cant get it to go the other way :-\

lol i got it to move both ways :p it was really hard though
you know how there is like a lighter grey circle that kinda blends into the darker grey background what i did was trace the circle with my eyes in the opposite direction that the cat was turning and then after a few moments it started moving in the direction that I followed

Yeah, me too :hmm:

Try closing one eye and see if it changes based on which eye you look at it with. Somepeople have a very dominate eye and the view from that one eye prevents other views.

There actually is nothing moving in the cat animation, it is composed of 35 separate images each shown for 1/16 of a second in the following sequence and repeating endlessly.

What we see are images facing from left to right in sequence. it is our brain's interpretation of these single images that we perceive as motion. Several "tricks" can be used to get it to appear to change direction.

close one eye, look mainly at either the left side and then the right side, do not look directly at the cat look at the lower right corner and then the lower left. different things will work for different people.

We can not distinguish one picture as an individual picture as our retina takes about 1/12 of a second to refresh so we perceive the sequence as motion when in reality nothing is moving.

It finally worked!!!

But I can't change it back... It was moving right.. when I closed one eye, it started moving left.. but now i cant get it move to the right :embarrass:

Weird...

i dont get this one

Keep staring. This is one scary optical illusion. Keep looking, it might take up to a minute, but it'll look like she's opened her eyes

:hmm: nothing happened....

I thought this one was nice as well

If at first you can not read this, close your eyes 90% and try again

This one has a major flaw. The corner is supposed to be either outwards or inwards depending on how you look at it. But in truth it's just that the top half gives the effect of facing inwards while the bottom half gives the effect of facing outwards. It doesn't give the effect of an illusion, it just gives the effect of conflicting perspective in the same picture.
