Doesn't it depend on the picture? I agree most people post pictures on facebook that are just horrible and completely inappropriate.
But wouldn't a picture of, lets say a group family picture be allowed to be used?

It's a disputed issue. Those scholars who are conservative and strictly follow kitab and sunnah oppose photography and keeping any animate pictures in home, however, many scholars allow it in this age.
