What should be done to stop pirates?

There was an interesting interview on the CBC with one of these pirates. He claimed to be a patriot, protecting Somali waters from foreign exploitation. It is true that foreign exploitation has polluted those waters nearly to the point of exhaustion. He showed his true colours though when the interviewer asked what he plans to do with the ransom money, and instead of answering that he'll use it to help the farmers and fishermen whose lives have been ruined, he answered that he'll buy more weapons.

Somalia - Piracy or a False Flage Op
Apart from the hot news of ‘why the West needs to attack Islamic Iran to save Israel’ - Smolian pirates are receiving a good media coverage lately. These pirates (carrying more than paper-cutting knives as the 9/11 hijackers did) have hijacked seven cargo ships so far. Interestingly, the western powers, which are always eager to collaborate when it comes to invading a Muslim country - declared their inability to stop such acts - just like the ‘war on terror’ bogey! In fact US military chief, Admiral Michael Mullen, admitted that he was “stunned” by the pirates’ reach. When they hijacked the cargo ship ‘Sirius Star’ (allegedly owned by Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Saud al-Faisal, of Somali coast - not far away - American, Russian, Turkish, Italian, British, and Greek frigates and warships were patrolling the Gulf of Aden under a UN mandate.

THE FOUR KNOWN PIRATE GANGS

1. SOMALI MARINES
2. NATIONAL VOLUNTEER COAST GUARD
3. MARKA GROUP
4. PUNTLAND GROUP

THE most powerful of them is the Somali Marines and known to be loyal to regional warlord Abdi Mohamed Afweyne. The group is said to have a capability to operate further offshore than the other groups and attack and seize ships, kidnap seamen and demand ransoms.

PIRACY in Somalia is a lucrative business, centred around drugs, weapons and human smuggling, primarily across the Gulf of Aden and back. The coast has been a major trade route for key commodities such as oil, grain and iron ore. Oil, for instance, travels from the Middle East down the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, and then to the southern regions of Africa. Along this route, ships have become targets for Somali pirates.

SOMALIA

Somalia has been without a central government since 1991 and does not have the capacity to interdict pirates or patrol its coastline. Feuding warlords in the county are in fact financed by the pirates, who pay for the upkeep of the militias.
