Please Help - I have missed over 3 years of missed Salat, Can I make up these Salat?

First and foremost, I wanted to thank you all for creating this forum. This is my second post, and I hope that I can gain guidance from our brothers and sisters to help me and others who may be similar. This forum is very helpful, and I have been reading it the past few days and want to improve myself. I was raised as a muslim, by my parents... but when I went to High School, and College I started to miss many prayers, and before I knew it I am an adult now. I cannot believe what has happened and recently I realized that I must make ammends and do all that I can do in this lifetime before time runs out...

I feel very guilty of doing this, and I know that it is very bad in Islam to Miss the Salawat. I want to strengthen my faith in Islam and make tawbat for missing these Salat, what can I do? Can I start to make up each salat again? (For example, after praying every salat, pray it again 2 times to make up for 2 years previously?)

Any guidance you can offer is greatly appreciated. I want to make Tawbat and repent for my sins, if you have any duats or guidance I appreciate it very much. Jazak Allah Khair
 
The best thing to do is beg Allah for forginvess and repent for missing salah as this is a terrible sin .. Start praying 5 x a day and read extra nafils .. Also, try to get up in the middle of the night to perform tahajjud .. May Allah forgive all ur sins Ameen
 
Thank you very much. Ok I will look into this. I feel very very guilty for this so I want to make tawbat.

Will it be acceptable to try and make up my salat? For example, each time I pray fajr, dhur, asr... I pray another fajr for the previous years?

Ok... So to make sure I get this right (and jazak allah khair THANK YOU SO MUCH)....:phew I must:

  • Pray 5 times a day as normal Muslim. (Do not need to pray Fajr 3 times, Duhr 3 times, Asr 3 times each day?)
  • Make Tawbat Duat = How do I do this?
  • Salat Tahajud = 2-8 Rakaat, after Ishaa -> Go to Sleep -> Wake up before fajr -> Pray 2-8 Rakaat
  • Salat Nafl = ??? Is this a Salat or a Duat? Can you please explain what it is?

Ok I took the time to google the internet and I found the Answer to my question. I made a Database for myself of Islam Notes, and here is what I found.

basically.... YOU ARE REQUIRED IN ISLAM TO NEVER MISS 1 FARD SALAH PERIOD SINCE DATE OF PUBERTY. SO I MUST MAKE UP ALL YEARS I MISSED. I AM 31 YEARS OLD NOW, BUT RASUL ALLAH SAID TO START TEACHING SALAT FROM 5 YEARS OLD, SO I MUST MAKE UP 26 YEARS OF SALAT BECAUSE I DONT KNOW WHEN I HAD PUBERTY.



Here are my notes to prove this (from google and the other websites). I am sharing this hopefully in case someone else reads this and is curious. Best of luck to everyone.

It is MANDATORY IN ISLAM TO MAKE UP ALL MISSED FARD (meaning the required 5x) PRAYERS

Correct proofs and the unanimous consensus of those who the imams consider scholars has shown that it is obligatory to make up missed prayers... Thus if you missed a month, a year, 20 years, it does not matter you MUST make up these prayers PERIOD!!!

...So... Calculate the number of years you need to make up. It says it is required in Islam since the age of Puberty Adolecense (for example age 12-15). So this means whenever you first menstruated/peniswatered. If you don't know when that is... Then start from the Age of 5, *...........................................I THINK* because the Rasul Allah said to teach your kids starting from 5.

- Rasul Allah said Start by age of 5... So if you dont know your age of puberty, then calculate from that Age: islamqa(Dot)com/en/ref/103420
- Women can subtract the menstruation dates from the total amount of Salat
- Pray your FARD Required Salat first (Fajr etc..), THEN Pray the Make Up Prayers.

- OK... SO.... Strategy Mine: Wake up in Morning ~3am, Pray Tahajud, Study Quran Surat, Pray Fajr, then Pray 26 Years worth of missed QADAH prayers (so fajr x26, dhur x26...). Use these prayers as a chance to practice memorized Quran for more fun! Mark this start date down and set a calander android setting to show that you must stop in 1 year. Extend the date longer if you want to do it in 2 years, or a day longer.

The position of all four schools of Sunni law is that it is obligatory (fard) to make up all missed prayers, regardless of why they were missed. And prayer is the first thing we will be questioned about on the Day of Judgement, as the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) informed us.

The position held by some contemporary modernists about not having to make up missed prayers is a deviant (shadhdh) position that is absolutely unacceptable.

One’s missed prayers are a debt owed to Allah. As such, the first step is to repent, by resolving not to willfully miss any more prayers, feeling remorse, seeking Allah’s forgiveness, and resolving to make them up. This resolve, to be true, needs proof. As such, one must make up one’s prayers as quickly as reasonably possible. The way to do this is to develop a routine whereby one makes up a given amount of prayers (such as 3, 4 or 5 days of prayers, or more) every day, without exception. And one should not forget that Allah Most High has told us in a Hadith Qudsi, “My servant draws near to Me by nothing more beloved to Me than that which I have made obligatory upon him.”

You need to make up all missed fard and wajib prayers. You do not need to make up missed sunna prayers. So, for missed Fajr prayers, you will pray two raka'at, and for missed Dhuhr prayers, you will pray four raka'at, and so on. You do need to make up missed Witr prayers. So when you pray your Qada Isha, you should follow that up with a Qada Witr.

You make up your missed Fard prayers and keep on praying your current Fard and Sunna prayers. Don't miss out on the barakah of Sunna prayers. These compensate for deficiencies in your Fard prayers. It's also blameworthy to deliberately skip Sunna prayers.

I have heard in a sermon on this topic and it was said that amongst the first things questioned after death is on our salat. Something like is our salat complete? And if the answer is 'no', then the next question is something like whether we have done Sunat prayers enoughh to cover the missing fardh ones... If yes, then we 'pass' kind of thing.

In other words, if you have missed years of salat, do plenty of sunat prayers.

Again, this is what I heard in a sermon. Hope it helps.

I'm not sure where you found this. There is a hadith which states:

Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As: The Messenger of Allah (:saws:) said: Command your children to pray when they become seven years old, and beat them for it (prayer) when they become ten years old; and arrange their beds (to sleep) separately. [Sunan Abi Dawud, Book 2, Hadith 105]

From what I could find, the usual age for puberty in boys is from 9 onwards. So I think you should re-check when to start calculating prayers from - asking a scholar would be best.

Although it is good you are keen to make up your prayers quickly, be careful of overburdening yourself such that you end up burning out and not completing the task. Make a routine that is sustainable and that you can continue with In sha Allah.

Thank you for giving me your advice. I appreciate it very much. I was googling somewhere and saw it for the age of 5, but maybe I made a mistake. Ok I will use your advice of age of 7 inshallah.

I will make a android application (inshallah sometime) which may help others keep track of their FARD QADAT prayers to make up.

I am 31 years old, and feel that I have never completed a full 1-year of my life of All-5-Prayers on-time for every day in the year, so I am required to make up my prayers. Thus, For my situation I use 365 days as a broad number and it looks like this:

Total # of Days left: 365
Current Prayer # in day: a21/26 (where f=fajr, d=duhr....) (where /26 means I am 31 Years old, and have to make up 26 years of prayer since the age of 5).

Oops, it should be 7 years of age so:

Total # of Days left: 365
Current Prayer # in day: a21/24 (where f=fajr, d=duhr,a=asr....) (where /24 means I am 31 Years old, and have to make up 24 years of prayer since the age of 5).


As I make up prayers, I change the numbers, and gradually decrease the number of days. If I cant complete the prayers, the numbers stay the same and I pray all my normal (from this day forward) hadr prayers on time. Does this make sense?

Qadha Salaat is valid from puberty onwards. I highly doubt it that you started puberty at age 7. You must make a conservative estimate of the time you started puberty but 7 is far too low. The average age of the onset of puberty for boys is from 11 onwards. So start it from age 11.

Also the schedule you have devised for making up Qadha Salaat is far too unrealistic. You will only burn yourself out and will pray like a robot with no emotion. Qadha Salaat will also be judged. Therefore it should be prayed with full concentration like any other Fard Salaah.

Therefore you should ammend your schedule and pray one Qadha after each Salaah or pray a few Qadha Salaat at a time of the day when you have the most energy but dont pray so many Qadha that you become tired and bored as that way you will not be doing justice to the Fard Salaat that you are making up.

Therefore concentrate on quality rather than quantity. Make up your Qadha gradually. If a person who is making up their Qadha happens to pass away then Allah may forgive that person insha'Allah because they made intention of making up all their missed Salaat. Regarding doing other good actions, then i admire your passion but again i urge you not to be unrealistic as you will not be able to keep up and be consistant and may eventually stop doing so many good actions due to burn out. Instead build up gradually. Concentrate more on quality in terms of having the best intentions and dincerity for each and every good action you do.

Your number one priority from now should be to pray each and every prayer on time and and every Fard prayer at the Masjid. For Tahajjud awaken an hour to half an hour before Fajr begins and pray and make sincere Dua.

Jazak Allah al Khair for your response, thank you so much as I am feeling the pressure of making up the Salat now. Yes, praying 26*5*365 is soo hard and I already feel the pressure.

I didnt know that it will be judged the same way. I feel very guilty now because since the past week, I have started to pray, but I would pray as fast as possible. I don't want to do the wrong things, so I appreciate everyones guidance on this forum.

Ok I will keep my counter with me and start from 11 years of age (Jazak Allah Khair). Thank you all for your guidance. I live in a country with very few muslims, so your internet advice has been very helpful to me.

I will now focus on making Qadat more correctly, and pray all the salawat as properly as I can. Jazak Allah khair soooo much.

Is it WAJIB to make up all of the WITR Salat also? (Shaf' + Witr is 3 rakaat after salat ishaa at night.)? Must I make up these salat also? Please help, thank you

It is only Waajib to make up the Witr prayer in the Hanafi Madhab. It is Sunnah to make up the Witr prayer in the Shafi'i and Maliki Madhabs.

Wow! We are strict with ourselves, aren't we? Hardly surprising you feel the pressure.

We must remember that Allah does not intend for it to make difficult for yourself and neither would He burden you more than you can bear. It is the intention and almost as important but not getting much attention, the consistency, not patchy. I have been told as a kid growing up that if we our life is short and we did not have the opportunity to complete our mission, like finish the Quran, then as long as we are well on route, attending class and making progress, not missing it etc then, Allah will consider it as complete.

So if we strive towards something achievable for ourselves and just ensure it happens, in syaa Allah...
