As the title said. Are muslims permited to pray for the mercy of non-muslims weather their alive or passed away. Also can you pray to knock some sense into them and make them wake up and realize the truth?

messenger of Allah (SWT) Muhammad (SAW), in the early days of Islam prayed for umar (R.A) and umro (abu jehel) that Allah give strength to Muslims by bringing one of them towards Islam. later Hazrat Umar (R.A) accepted islam.
Muslims can pray for the hidayah of there non Muslim family friends and others..
