Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children...

-Quran (57:20)

Does this mean other aspects of life are virtually meaningless? Or is it interpreted as Iman and practice of faith is generally more important?

Read the following hadith and it will help you better understand in shaa Allaah

Sahl bin Sa'd narrated that the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"If the world to Allah was equal to a mosquito's wing, then He would not allow the disbeliever to have a sip of water from it."

[Jaami al-Tirmidhi]

I do not quite understand this hadeeth.
does it mean that a mosquito's wing is very bad? and the world is not that bad?
Because disbeliever do drink water from it (the world)

Or does it mean the world is much worse than a mosquito's wing so the disbeliever are allowed to drink water from it?

It is a way of making cozy people think about the base and frivolous nature of accepting this world as the highest attainment.

When something is very prized you only give to the ones that are most dear to you. You keep the best things for the best people.

When something is worthless, you give it out for free. Consider a wardrobe of useless clothes. You give it out because you want to get rid of it.

The next world is prized. It has everlasting pleasures. It is saved for the best of all, namely those who believe in Allaah and follow His Commands.

In contrast, this world is worth nothing. So, even the kaafir gets all kinds of things.

If the world had any significance even so much as that of a mosquito's wing, then the kaafir would have not gotten anything from it because you don't give something which has any significance to an open enemy of yours.

I hope that helps you understand the hadiith.
