Quran Ayahs

"Guard strictly (the five obligatory) As-Salawat (the prayers) especially the middle Salat (i.e., the best prayer - `Asr).'' (2:238)

"But if they repent and perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat) and give Zakat, then leave their way free.'' (9:5)

Hadiths

Ibn Mas`ud (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I asked the Messenger of Allah (PBUH): "Which act is the best?'' He (PBUH) said, "As-Salat at their fixed times.'' I asked, "What next?'' He (PBUH) said, "Being dutiful to parents.'' I asked, "What next?'' He (PBUH) said, "Striving (Jihad) in the way of Allah.''

Ibn `Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "Islam is based on five (pillars): testifying that there is no true god except Allah and that Muhammad (PBUH) is His slave and Messenger; performing of Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat); the payment of Zakat; performing Hajj (pilgrimage) to the House [of Allah (Ka`bah)]; and Saum (fasting) during the month of Ramadan.''

Ibn `Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "I have been commanded to fight against the people till they testify La ilaha illAllah (There is no true god except Allah) and that Muhammad (PBUH) is His slave and Messenger, and to establish As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), and to pay Zakat; and if they do this, then their blood and property are secured except by the rights of Islam, and their accountability is left to Allah.''

Mu`adh (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) sent me as a governor to Yemen and (at the time of departure) he instructed me thus: "You will go to people of the Scripture (i.e., the Jews and the Christians). First of all invite them to testify that La ilaha ill Allah (There is no true god except Allah) and that Muhammad (PBUH) is His slave and Messenger; and if they accept this, then tell them that Allah has enjoined upon them five Salat (prayers) during the day and night; and if they accept it, then tell them that Allah has made the payment of Zakat obligatory upon them. It should be collected from their rich and distributed among their poor; and if they agree to it, don't take (as a share of Zakat) the best of their properties. Beware of the supplications of the oppressed, for there is no barrier between it and Allah.''

Jabir (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "Between a man and disbelief and paganism is the abandonment of Salat (prayer).''

Buraidah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "That which differentiates us from the disbelievers and hypocrites is our performance of Salat. He who abandons it, becomes a disbeliever.''

Shaqiq bin `Abdullah reported: The Companions of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) did not consider the abandonment of any action as disbelief except neglecting Salat.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "The first of man's deeds for which he will be called to account on the Day of Resurrection will be Salat. If it is found to be perfect, he will be safe and successful; but if it is incomplete, he will be unfortunate and a loser. If any shortcoming is found in the obligatory Salat, the Glorious and Exalted Rubb will command to see whether His slave has offered any voluntary Salat so that the obligatory Salat may be made up by it. Then the rest of his actions will be treated in the same manner.''

Prayer is the second pillar upon which rests the edifice of Islam, the first pillar being the testimony of faith. Islam stresses this act of worship and sternly warns against neglecting it. Prayer is the central pillar of faith. It is the key to Paradise and the first matter to be accounted for on the Day of Judgment. It is also the first of the religious obligations brought by the Prophets after faith in Allah.

In the Qur’ân, Allah says to Moses (peace be upon him): “Verily I am Allah. There is no Allah but Me, so worship Me and establish prayer to celebrate My praises.” [Sûrah TâHâ: 14]

Allah relates to us the supplication of Abraham (peace be upon him) as follows: “My Lord, have me and my descendants establish prayer. My Lord, accept my supplication.” [Sûrah Ibrâhîm: 40]

Likewise, Ishmael (peace be upon him) used to order his family to pray. Allah says: “He used to order his family to pray and pay Zakâh, and he was pleasing to his Lord.” [Sûrah Maryam: 55]

The Messiah (peace be upon him) mentioned prayer when he was in the cradle. Allah relates to us his words: “And He enjoined prayer and Zakâh (alms) upon me as long as I live.” [Sûrah Maryam: 31]

As for the importance of prayer, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “All that stands between a man (on the one hand) and polytheism and unbelief (on the other) is his abandonment of prayer.” [Sahîh Muslim (242)]

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The covenant that exists between us and them is that of prayer; whoever gives it up is an unbeliever.” [Musnad Ahmad (22428), Sunan al-Tirmidhi (2621), Sunan al-Nasâ’î (462)]

It is required for every Muslim to perform five obligatory prayers a day. A Muslim turns toward Mecca when performing these prayers, facing the first house ever built for the worship of Allah, the Ka`bah, erected by Abraham and his son Ishmael (peace be upon them both).

Allah says: "And remember Abraham and Ishmael raised the foundations of the House and said: "Our Lord, accept this from us, verily You are the All-Hearing, All-Knowing." [Sûrah al-Baqarah: 127]

By facing the Ka`bah, it is as though we are all worshiping together in the same place.

We perform these prayers throughout the day and night, and they a constant reminder of a Muslim's duty to Allah. Prayer keeps us away from sin. Allah says: “Establish prayer, for verily prayer restrains from shameful and unjust deeds.” [Sûrah al-`Ankabût: 45]

Prayer is also a chance to turn to Allah in worship, to give thanks, to ask for forgiveness, and to ask for His Guidance and Mercy.

Some benefits of prayer:

1. It enriches the soul and fulfills its yearning to connect with its Lord. This gives the soul peace and contentment.

2. It purifies the heart from the effects of indolence and sin by providing a continuous opportunity for communication with Allah and for repentance.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) indicated this when he said to his Companions: “Consider if one of you had a river by his door in which he bathed five times a day. Would any filth remain on him?” They responded in the negative. He said: “Likewise, Allah wipes away sins with the five daily prayers.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (528) and Sahîh Muslim (667)]

This stresses the meaning of Allah’s words: “Establish prayer, for verily prayer restrains from shameful and unjust deeds. And the remembrance of Allah is the greatest thing.” [Sûrah al-`Ankabût: 45]

3. It emphasizes the proximity between religion and daily life. Life, from an Islamic standpoint, is to be directed to Allah. Life is an opportunity for worship and the remembrance of Allah. Praying repeatedly throughout the day, interrupting the daily activities, brings about the realization of this concept. The believer, through prayer, acquires a spiritual awareness that he takes with him throughout all of life’s endeavors.

4. Prayer teaches punctuality. Allah Has determined specific times for the daily prayers which may not be violated. Allah says: “For such prayers are enjoined on believers at stated times.” [Sûrah al-Nisâ’: 103]

This shows us the importance of time.

5. Prayer teaches the Muslim the virtues of constancy and perseverance while opening the door to greater effort. Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said: “The beloved deeds to Allah are the ones performed most regularly, even if they are small.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (6464) and Sahîh Muslim (783)]

6. Prayer cultivates brotherhood, equality, and humility between the Muslims. Everyone stands together before Allah in their ranks with no distinction between them.
