FIQH OF SPORTS, RECREATION AND ENTERTAINMENT

Sport, and other forms of physical recreation, can be an enjoyable and effective way in achieving a healthy lifestyle. People participate in recreation due to certain motives which could include a search for pleasure, stress release, socialising, physical fitness, personal achievement, self-confidence and staying fit in order to carry out every command of Allah. Activities like swimming, archery and horse riding are especially encouraged by Islam. Entertainment is also increasingly taking up large parts of people day-to-day lives such that in some cases sadly it effects a persons duty towards family, friends and even Allah.
With the ever increasing ways a person chooses to relax and entertain themselves, friends and family, it’s essential to learn what the Islamic guidance on such activities are.
This class will cover questions and issues related to sports, recreation and entertainment such as:
- Islamic history covering sports, recreation and entertainment
- Shariah guidance pertinent to sporting, recreation and entertainment
- Spiritual benefits and/or harms
- Watching (for example: on TV, at the stadium or theatre) or taking part (for example: playing, performing, acting)
- Nasheeds and Poetry (includes ‘music’ in Islam)
- Permissible and forbidden hobbies
- Games of chance, traditional board based games played on boards or digitally
- Modern day IT based recreation and entertainment (for example: video games, social media/networking websites)
- Body ‘building’ and/or ‘toning’
- Traditional and contemporary arts and crafts
- Extreme and Adrenalin sports
- Theme and amusement parks
- Everyone who takes part in any form of sport, recreation or entertainment
- Youth workers
- Community Club/Centre workers.
- Those studying or intending to study within the fields of sport, recreation or entertainment.
- Those working or intending to pursue careers in sport, recreation or entertainment sectors.
- Those who generally want to enhance their understanding of the Deen.
