As they say, tie your camel and then trust in Allah swt. We need to work really, really hard to attain success in both this world and in the hereafter. When you begin to worry about the past, or overthink about the future, you can become weighed down with all of that baggage and you forget to look towards what you can do *now*.
I firmly believe that no sincere effort will ever go to waste. If not in this life, you will certainly reap the rewards in the akhirah in'sha'Allah.
