shawwal fasting

Assalamu alaikum.
I would like to know how do i follow the timings of sehri and iftaar in shawwaal, sometimes the adaan is inaudible in my place. Will it be acceptable if i go see the sky myself, what if i fail to distinguish the dawn or the dusk.
