The Noble Messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam, said:--"He who does not show mercy to people, Allah also does not show mercy to him". (Bukhari)
When we want to be mean to somebody or punish them, we give ourselves ample justification for it. This Noble Hadith gives us a very good reason to put our anger/meanness aside, and show forgiveness/gentleness instead. None can do without Allah's Mercy, so we should not shut the door of goodness on ourselves by being petty with others. It is just not worth it.
