This has overlapped with me reading an article today on native american indians. Apparently, before europeans took over, the natives didn't have set gender roles. They instead acknowledged 5 genders; “Female, male, Two Spirit female (female who has compulsion to behave like males), Two Spirit male (male who has compulsion to behave like female) and Transgendered.”
"In Native American cultures, people were valued for their contributions to the tribe, rather than for masculinity or femininity. Parents did not assign gender roles to children either, and even children’s clothing tended to be gender neutral. There were no ideas or ideals about how a person should love; it was simply a natural act that occurred without judgement or hesitation."
“The Two Spirit people in pre-contact Native America were highly revered and families that included them were considered lucky. Indians believed that a person who was able to see the world through the eyes of both genders at the same time was a gift from The Creator.”
Acknowledging the modesty thing, this is something which I've never come across before.
But this really shouldn't make us question their choices, as in examples in history have often repeated themselves. God has stated that He has sent a messenger to all communities throughout time. So where the corruption has occured, that knowledge is only wth Him. Such tribes have awareness of a Creator, it's an innate acknowledgement. But their practices are solely based around on what they've been exposed to, whatever their forefathers practiced, it's only a continuation of that.
Remember God is Just, they will be Judged fairly, everyone's journey is subhan'Allah different.
Allahu Alam.
