The importance of seeking knowledge

This thread is intended to list all the important reasons you personally think its important to seek (Islamic) knowledge. List your reasons and justifications.

I'll start off:
-its important so that we know how to worship allah.
 
1. So that I don't continue to spread venomous falsehoods about Islam in my work as a journalist
2. So I am able to help properly educate others and debunk the lies that are spread about Islam by my American media colleagues
3. So I can understand the happiness and peace that I often see Muslims have
4. So I can better understand myself as a young woman
5. So I can strengthen my own faith
 
so I can save myself and my loved ones.

Without knowledge you may not know what is right and what is wrong, and that could lead to the worst outcomes in this world and hereafter.
 
Fiqh>>> To differentiate halaal wa haraam
Arabic>>> To understand kalaamullaah wa ahaadeeth

Rasoolullaah Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said in a hadeeth reported in Al-Bukhaari: ''Talabul ‘ilmi fareedhatun ‘ala kulli muslim… Which means: Seeking knowledge is compulsory upon every muslim.
 
The importance..its like the difference between the heart which is alive and the heart which is dead..Ilm awakens a person up from the deep sleep of ignorance... it brings you closer to Allah swt..if Allah intends good for a person He grants the person understanding in deen...its an obligation upon all of us..it is the NOOR of Allah swt..and remember..the light of Allah does is not bestowed upon the rebellious one.
 
Knowledge removes ignorance and brings you from darkness to light. But it's important you impelement the knowledge you learn otherwise you're making you're situation worse.

Islam has helped me to find a greater understanding about prayer, fasting, anger, and fear of God, even though I remain Christian, somehow the same God hears all our prayers

Knowledge seems to be the collection of facts, the higher path seems to be wisdom, and wisdom starts with the fear of God.

What choices in life do we take, do our choices and actions bring glory to God?

In the spirit of seeking the wisdom to change ourselves.

It's interesting you mention knowledge alongside fear of God. In the Qur'an, Allaah (swt) teaches us that:

It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allaah. [Faatir 35:28]

Ibn Katheer (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
Those who fear Him as He should be feared are those who have knowledge of Him, because the more a person knows of the Almighty, All-Powerful, the more he will fear Him.

And it was narrated that Ibn Mas’ood (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:
The sign of knowledge is not narrating many ahaadeeth, rather the sign of knowledge is fearing Allaah a great deal… ​

Al-Hasan al-Basri said:
The one who has knowledge is the one who fears the Most Merciful in private, and seeks that which Allaah wants for him and abstains from that which incurs the wrath of Allaah. Then al-Hasan recited the verse: “It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allaah. Verily, Allaah is All‑Mighty, Oft‑Forgiving”.


So, it's important to seek knowledge to increase our fear of Allaah (swt). May Allaah (swt) increase us all in beneficial knowledge, Aameen!

I seem to remember one of your brothers mention that, we need to balance the fear of God, with the love and mercy of God. He likened it to the wings of a bird, they need to be balanced in order for the bird to fly.

From my experiences, seeking knowledge about our deen keeps us from committing bigger sins. Moving away from this search for knowledge makes it easier to commit more sins. They say praying 5 times a day keeps you from committing sins, and it does, to an extent. But I think that seeking knowledge at the same time makes you grow more as a person and takes up time, so there isn't as much room for sinning so much.

The use of the word ‘knowledge’ in Islam, and ‘wisdom’ in Christianity’ seem to have a similar meaning. I certainly find that Islam helps my understanding of Christianity, and that might seem strange, but the same God hears all our prayers

That is true. It is said that the true and praiseworthy fear is that which stops a person from the prohibitions of Allah. But when fear exceeds this boundary, it may bring hopelessness and despair. For that reason, a balance must be maintained. It should be noted that fear in this context is not like the type of fear commonly known, where one runs away from the object of fear. Rather when one fears Allaah (swt), he runs towards Him for refuge.

Another point, which may well be related to the concept of fear, is that knowledge should bring humility. I read a great analogy on this which said:
When a tree has more fruits, its branches come down. Thus, more fruits of knowledge should make one lower himself like the branches.

It's important to seek knowledge in order to acquire taqwa.

Reason 1: "It is only those who have knowledge among His servants that fear Allah."

(Qur'an, Fatir 35:28)

Reason 2: "Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is he who has most taqwah."

(Qur'an, Al-Hujurat 49:13)

In other words, to achieve the greatest honor that one can have on the Day of Judgment, we need to acquire the most taqwah. And we can't reach that status without seeking knowledge.

seeking knowledge is important so that ignorance can be lifted from you and therefore doubt can disappear. doubt is difficult to deal with when it comes in form of wiswaas (whispers from the shaytan) and can greatly hamper ones ability to pray, fast, perfrom acts of worship properly leading one to NOT be very tranquil in thier ibaadah....if one isnt tranquil in 3ibaadah, it may not be very enjoyable. sometimes they may find it too difficult and possibly inconveneint causing them to give up that act of worhsip. in some cases, it may also lead on to go into extremes in thier deen.

so seeking knoweldge is important in this respect so that those doubts can be extinguished and so you can perfrom your 3ibadah (worship) with a sound mind and heart.

Fear (of Allah's displeasure or punishment) is not only for grave sinners, but also for the pious, observant believers, as in the following hadeeth: Aisha said, "O Messenger of Allah, is the verse "And those who dispense their charity while their hearts fear that to their Lord they must return" [23:60] referring to someone who commits fornication, drinks alcohol and steals and still fear Allah? The Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam, said, "No, O daughter of as-Siddiq, but it refers to one who fasts, perform salah and gives charity, and fears that it may not be accepted from him." (Tirmithi) Al-Hasan, commenting on this, said, "By Allah, they (the Companions) obeyed Him and strove hard in it, yet they feared it might be rejected. A believer combines righteousness with fear in his heart, while a hypocrite combines evil with impunity."
