The Injured Pigeon: A Small Act of Mercy
My youngest daughter, who is 22 and lives in the suburbs west of Hamburg, recently found an injured and bleeding rock pigeon. It was an ordinary city pigeon—speckled grey, with no special breed or distinguishing features—but it had clearly suffered. A dog had attacked it, and at only about 250 grams, it was severely underweight.
By comparison, the wood pigeons in my area weigh between 500 and 750 grams, although they are naturally a much larger species.
Despite having a limited income, my daughter’s compassion moved her to take the injured bird to a reputable veterinarian here in Schleswig-Holstein, where I live. She has already taken it twice for treatment.
The pigeon initially refused to eat, so, following the veterinarian’s instructions, my daughter had to feed it by hand. It also needed antibiotics to prevent blood poisoning, along with other medication.
While its condition was still critical, I sent my daughter the following message:
I also told my daughter what pigeons like to eat, so she bought wheat, oats, and spelt—Dinkel in German—from the health-food section of a local drugstore.
Alhamdulillah, the pigeon gradually began feeding on its own. It even started practising its flying in her apartment. Seeing this small creature regain its strength was a deeply moving experience.
Surah 16:79, An-Nahl — The Bee
“Do they not see the birds held under control in the atmosphere of the sky? None holds them up except Allah. Surely in this are signs for those who believe.”
Today, the pigeon had its final check-up at the veterinarian. Thankfully, there were no further signs of blood poisoning. It was also tested for avian influenza, and the result was negative.
Alhamdulillah—a clean bill of health!
Allahu akbar! What began as a wounded and frightened city pigeon has become a reminder that every living creature matters, and that even a small act of compassion can be an act of worship and charity.
