From the Fatawa Delivered by Shaikh Muhammad bin Salih Al-'Uthaimin, Member of the Committee of Grand Scholars

[Question No. 357, Volume II, Page 304]

Question:
His Eminence Sheikh Muhammad As-Salih Al-`Uthaimin, may Allah shower His Mercy o*n him, was asked about the ruling o*n hiring a reciter to recite the Qur'an for a deceased person.

Answer :
This is an innovation in religion. The recitation will entail no reward either for the reciter or the deceased. The reciter recites the Qur'an for worldly pursuits, while good deeds which are meant for worldly purposes do not achieve nearness to Allah and are rewardless. Thus, hiring a reciter to recite the Qur'an for a deceased person is a vain practice and it leads to wasting the money of the heirs aimlessly. It is an innovation in religion and evil practice that should be warned against.

SOmething interesting.... question. Well reciting a Quran?, did you mean by saying that reciting Yasin for the deceased?

Normally they do this for the deceased annually. Yes it happen in my country as well, they hire a a reciter to recite the Yasin and hadiah it to the deceased. And of course they will be small gathering which is the family members. So does that mean this is a innovation and In Islam is a big NO NO?
