By: Darul Ilm
By: Darul Ilm
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015
People have asked about the ruling regarding destroying statues, so In-Shaa Allaah what will follow will be some info regarding that (1)
The Verdict:
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015
Firstly: Destroying idols was one of the duties of Rasoolullaah Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam, and the Sahaabah followed that way too (2)
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015
Secondly: It is the viewpoint of the Madhaahib to destroy idols/statues, and the Ummah as a whole, excluding the modernist deviants (3)
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015
Thirdly: It is not a new ruling, but rather it comes already from the time of Ibraaheem `Alayhis Salaam who destroyed idols. (4)
Proof from Ahaadeeth and the Sunnah:

Regarding idols, if it's in peoples (dhimmis) homes, or like jesus idols in churches, then those are left, but any public ones are to be destroyed.

Commenting on the Aayah "Wa qul jaa'al haqqu wa zahaqal baatil" Imaam Al-Qurtubi Rahimahullaah says: (1)
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015
"In this Aayah is proof of destroying idols when you overcome them (i.e. the enemy)." (2)

Rasoolullaah Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam sent Hadhrat Jareer Ibn `Abdillaah Radhiallaahu `anhu to yemen to destroy the idol Dhul Khalasah.

Rasoolullaah Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam sent Hadhrat `Amr Ibn Al-`Aas Radhiallaahu `Anhu to destroy the idol Suwaa`.

Hadhrat Tufayl Ibn `Amr Radhiallaahu `Anhu was sent to the tribe of Dows to destroy their idol Dhul Kaffayn.

Hadhrat Sa`d Ibn Zayd Radhiallaahu `Anhu was sent to al-Mushallal to destroy the idol Manaat.
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015
We additionally know of the hundreds of idols destroyed by Rasoolullaah Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam on the conquest of Makkah.
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015
So this was the way of Rasoolullaah Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam and the Sahaabah regarding treatment of idols.
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015
If someone says: "The sahaabah never destroyed idols!" Then i will ask: "Name me one single idol they passed and did not destroy?" (1)
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015
If they say "the sphinx for example", then that was already covered in sand before even the time of `Eesaa `Alayhis Salaam (2)
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015
The sphinx and the pyramids etc were only excavated less than 200 years ago, so at the time of the Sahaabah they were buried in sand (3)
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015
Were it to have been open back then, then even without the help of explosives, the Sahaabah would have made a plan to destroy it all. (4)

Hadhrat `Ali Radhiallaahu `Anhu narrates that Rasoolullaah Sallallaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam sent him on a mission saying: (1)

"Do not leave an idol without destroying it, nor a raised grave without leveling it." Saheeh Muslim. (2)
Proof from the Four Madhaahib
Hanafi Madhab:
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015
Let us now turn to the books of Fiqh and see what the Fuqahaa have said regarding idols, starting with the Hanafi madhab.
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015
The Hanafis: Imaam As-Sarakhsi Rahimahullaah says in Sharh Siyar Al-Kabeer: "If amongst the booty a cross of gold or silver is found... (1)
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015
...Or an idol, or a Dirham or Deenaar which has pictures on it, then it is the duty of the Imaam to break it all." (2)
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015
In Fataawaa Al-Hindiyyah it says: "If gold or silver necklaces are found in the booty and it has crosses or pictures on it, then.... (1)
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015
....Then it should first be broken before being distributed." (2)
Maaliki Madhab:
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015
The Maalikis: I had listed Imaam Al-Qurtubi Rahimahullaah's view on Aayah 81 of Surah Al-Israa, saying that it's proof for breaking idols.
Shaafi`i Madhab:
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015 View translation
The Shaafi`is: Imaam Ibn `Abdis Salaam Rahimahullaah mentions in Qawaa`idul Ahkaam Fee Masaalihil Anaam, he gives the example of Jihaad (1)
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015
Saying: "There are three rights in this regard, first is Allaah's right, which is that Kufr be eradicated and removed from the hearts (2)
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015
Hearts of the Kuffaar, and from their tongues as well. As well as destroying their churches, crosses and idols." (3)
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015 View translation
Imaam Ibn Hajar Al-Haytami Rahimahullaah says in Tuhfatul Muhataaj: "Idols, crosses, tools of futility (e.g. musical instruments) and... (1)
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015
And prohibited containers. There is nothing to be paid by the one who breaks it, because it is an obligation upon the one who can do it" (2)
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015 View translation
Imaam Zakariyyaa Al-Ansaari Rahimahullaah says in Asnaa Al-Mataalib: "It is obligatory upon a Mukallaf that's able, to destroy idols."
Hanbali Madhab:
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015 View translation
Lastly the Hanbalis: Imaam Al-Mardaawi Rahimahullaah says in Al-Insaaf Fee Ma`rifatir Raajihi Minal Khilaaf: on the topic of breaking... (1)
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015
Breaking certain things and not being liable to pay anything: "Similarly (one can break) sticks (a musical instrument), drums.... (2)
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015
....Backgammon, tools of sihr, exorcism and fortune telling, fantasy images, as well as statues and idols..." (3)
Darul Ilm @darul_ilm 28 Feb 2015
So that then are the views of the four Madhaahib. And as you can see, there is no place anywhere in Islaam for idols. And Allaah Knows Best
