The Unlettered Prophet.

As-Salaam alaikum,
In ayat 157 of Surat A'araf (7:157), the Holy Qur'an referred to the sobriquet of Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam, as nabiyy ummiyy...the ''unlettered Prophet''.

He did not attend any school for formal education... to learn how to read and/or write. The Prophet's knowledge came only from Allah Ta'ala, not from reflection and consideration. At the time of creation of the Prophet's light, Allah gave him the universal Intellect, called the Total intellect as well as the Pen and the Guarded Tablet. He endowed him with the whole of His eternal Wisdom, because our blessed Master, alaihi salaat was salaam, is the source of light, which Allah drew directly from His own Essence. Consequently, the Prophet's personality contains all of Allah's Truth, which enabled him to see and understand everything.

If (as is confirmed in the Quran) Allah is the light of the heavens and the earth, and someone claims that the Prophet (who is referred to above as master/rabbi) is the source of light, it begins to feel all too familiar....
Sounds eerily like the catholic creed chant non-sensically attempting to make Jesus God, God's co-eternal and also only-begotten son, and co-eternal servant and father and son and self born to His own consort.....fantastically absurd.

Only Allah knows everything and no part of creation, not even Prophet (saw) shares Allah's divinity/essence

It's dangerous to interpret hadiths ourselves and we should refer them to Scholars

For example, if a hadith says Allah made Prophet (saw) from His light, it means Allah made Prophet (saw) from a created light that belongs to Allah and not from any divine light of Allah's essence

It looks like I have to give some additional explanations to/on this topic above which I posted, and drew some comments... so that what I meant will be a little more clear.

Undoubtedly, Allah Ta'ala is the Light of heavens and earth... just as we read it in ayat 35 of Surat Nuri of the Holy Qur'an where Allah Ta'ala says:--

"Allah is the light of the heavens and earth." (24:35)

In a sense, this light expresses the breath of Allah...nafas- a breath of light, not air. Air only exists on the earth. You will find very few planets with air, yet Allah is Rabbi-l-Alameen. You will find very few planets without light.

Light is the measure of our universe- we measure distance and time by light. Life itself can only exist when light is present. This Light of Allah, Nuri-Allah, which is the breath of Allah, is called Nafas ar-Rahman, the breath of the All Merciful. Do not mistake it for our breathing, because when this [our] breathing stops, the light is still going on in the grave, as life still goes on in the grave.

This point becomes clearer when we consider what Sheikh Muhiyiddeen Ibn Arabi, may Allah be Merciful to him, narrated in his Futuhat Makkiyyah, on Sayyadina Khidr's sayings to Maulana Sahl at-Tustatri that:--

"Allah created the light of Muhammad from His Light. This light stayed before Allah for 100, 000 years.
Allah directed His Gaze upon it 70,000 times every day and night, adding to it a new light from His light
every time. Then, from that light, He created all creations."

This agrees with that famous Hadith of Jabir Ibn Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported in most of the canonical Hadith collections, where that companion asked the Prophet, Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam, about the first thing was created. He said:- "The light of your Prophet O Jabir. Allah created it, and every gift from it. Then after that, He created every thing else from it.."

And, also, by the bestowal of Allah Ta'ala, the Prophet, Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam, had within himself manifest the Divine Attributes which are supernatural from ordinary human standard... for example, he said:--

"Allah has folded the entire earth in front of me. So I can simultaneously observe everything
from its east to its west." (Muslim) and

"Allah has placed this worldly manifestation in such a mysterious way in front of my eyes that
whatever will be created until the Day of Judgement, I can see them as if they are right on top
of my palm." (Tabarani)

Ibn al arabi's comments is not to be interpreted in a shirky way as he wouldn't have meant it like that. Sufi comments need to be interpreted by Scholars too as a laymen could easily misinterpret it.

Ibn al Arabi said:

"Beware lest you ever say anything that does not conform to the pure Sacred Law. Know that the highest stage of the perfected ones (rijal) is the Sacred Law of Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace). And know that the esoteric that contravenes the exoteric is a fraud" (al-Burhani: al-Hall al-sadid, 32).

Thus nothing must be interpreted to attribute divine qualities to any part of creation at all

Them hadiths about Prophet (saw) being shown about the future of earth is Allah informing Prophet ('saw) of end of times signs. Not that He taught him everything Allah knows. One hadith says Prophet (saw) stood in front of Sahaba (ra) and told them everything that will happen till last day.

This cannot be literal in meaning as every little thing to happen will take literally years and years to tell, so if the Prophet ('saw) said 'everything' in an hour or 2, this means he was telling of the signs of last day which a Scholar can chronologise in several pages

One simple thing to remember is that, shirk is to attribute divinity to anything other than Allah thus Allah's attributes such as the All Knowing etc etc belongs only to Allah

Here's the view of Prophet (saw) being a light ('as well as a normal human); you'll see it is not considered Allah's divine attribute of Al-Nur at all:


Though the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) is the Light of Allah, he is of course a created light. Someone who believes otherwise has made the mistake of the Christians with Jesus (upon whom be peace), or the Hindus with their Avatars. We saw in the discussion at the end of question (5) above that an ascriptive (idafa) construction like Nur Allah does not show that this Nur or ‘Light’ is an attribute of Allah. Rather, the ascriptive construction in this case is a kind called idafa tashrif, or an ‘ascription of ennoblement’, like the title Bayt Allah ‘The House of Allah’ for the Kaaba in Mecca, named this for its nobility, not that Allah lives inside, much less that it is divine attribute. Or like the she-camel that was sent to Thamud, which was called in the Qur’an Naqat Allah ‘The She-Camel of Allah’ as an ascription of ennoblement; namely, because of its inviolability in the Shari‘a of that time—not that it was ridden by Allah, or was a divine attribute.
