found this bit of HX on the wailing wall
As with many other cities, a wall was built around Jerusalem to protect it from invasions. This wall completely surrounded the city. The first to build such a wall were the Jebusites. Archaeologists discovered the remains of the Jebusite wall in 1960. The wall was rebuilt several times during the Roman, Umayyad and Ayyubid periods. The Ayyubid Sultan Salah al-Din helped the workmen to build the city walls after he liberated Jerusalem from the Crusaders, and he increased the city defenses by digging a moat all around the city wall. In 616 AH / 1210 AD al-Malik al-Mu’adham Isa destroyed the wall so that the Crusaders would not be able to hold the city.
The present wall was built by the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent between 1536 and 1540 AD. It is 3662 meters in length and 11-12 meters in height. The wall has seven gates: New Gate, Hebron Gate, Column or Damascus Gate, the Moroccans’ Gate, Herod’s Gate, St Stephen’s or Lion’s Gate and David’s Gate. Until the end of the Ottoman period the gates were opened in the morning and closed in the evening.

And it was built around a city five times the size of the old one. I made quite a study of this earlier for an angelic treasure hunt, hoping to identify the original location of the Water Gate which was one of the markers, but... sigh.
