Tips to wake up for Fajr

In the Qur’an, Allah Most High says:

“So establish the Prayer after the declining of the sun [from its zenith, for Dhuhr and then Asr] to the dusk of night [Maghrib and then ‘Isha] and the [Quranic]recitation of Fajr [prayer]. Indeed, the [Quranic] recitation of Fajr is witnessed.” [al-Quran 17:78]

The meaning of witnessed here means that both the angels of [previous] night and the angels of the [new] morning intently listen to the Fajr prayer being recited aloud because of its great status and virtue. [al-Suyuti, Tafsir al-Jalalayn]

The Messenger of Allah (Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) has said:
“Whoever performs the Prayer before the rising of the sun [Fajr] and before its setting [‘Asr], will not enter the Hell.” [Muslim]

and

“Whoever prays the two cooler prayer times (i.e., Fajr and `Asr) will enter Paradise.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Ibn ‘Allan comments on that Fajr and ‘Asr were specified since they are two times when one can easily miss the prayer: whether they are lost in sleep during Fajr, or engrossed in trade and work at ‘Asr. It is understood that the one who prays these two, usually prays all five daily prayers.

Finally, the reward mentioned in the hadith indicates that the one who regularly prays Fajr and ‘Asr can be expected to have a good ending to their life: that they die upon faith as a Muslim. Which of us would not be eager to rise for the Fajr prayer if we truly understood the benefits: a death on faith and eternal success? [Ibn ‘Allan, Dalil al-Faliheen]

If a person wakes up for Fajr late:

If a person is late for any prayer particularly Fajr then they should pray it as soon as they can even if they can see the light outside. As long as one makes utmost effort to pray every prayer on time particularly fajr then that is what counts but one should be careful to ensure one does everything possible to be able to pray every prayer at its appointed time and not delay it for no valid reason.

Sometimes a person may wake up late for fajr even though one tried their best to wake up on time and for that one should ask Allah to pardon them and they will find Allah most merciful. But there are always steps we can take to ensure we never pray Fajr late nor miss it.

Here are some tips for praying Fajr prayer on time:

1. Try to sleep as early as possible if you do not need to do anything imortant after Isha Salaah because the earlier you sleep the easier it will be to wake up for Fajr

2. Try not to have any heavy meals in the evening as this will make it harder for you to wake up for Fajr

3. Try to encourage your family to also wake up for Fajr and tell them of the importance of Salaah as well as the fact that it is the purpose of our creation. If your family wakes up for Fajr then it will also be easier for you as they would also wake you up. If one or two of your family members do wake up for Fajr then tell them to also wake you up.

4. Make firm intention in your heart that you will wake up for Fajr no matter what and ask of Allah in your dua to make it easy for you to wake up for Fajr prayer.

5. Put on two or even three alarms and put them on 5 minutes apart and put them in places in your room where you know it will be a struggle getting to them. This way you will have to be wide awake to get to the alarms. As there will be three of them this will prevent you going back to bed again.

6. Most importantly when you awaken for Fajr then do NOT say to yourself i'll lay for a bit and then get up. This is the biggest trick of shaythan to make us fall asleep and miss Fajr prayer. As soon as the eyes are open then go straight to the bathroom.

May Allah enable us to pray every prayer on its appointed time and no later. Ameen

Assalamualykum.

this is almost a daily problem with me and i keep forgetting to search for the solution. JazakaAllah Khair brother

JazakAllah for the above.

Another way to ensure that you awake early for fajr, is to drink a glass of water just before bedtime.

There is no greater motivation (from a human needs point of view) of leaving the warmth of your bed.....than a full bladder :)

And with time, your own circadian clock resets itself - so, insha Allah, you will find yourself awaking at around the same time everyday - even without the need for an alarm clock :)

Also, for those who do not live close to a masjid (as myself) - can invest in an 'Azaan' clock: some are able to automatically re-adjust to the times of salaah through the year.
Waking up to the call to prayer - next to your ear :) - has worked for me....and also has put 'pressure' on the rest of my family to arise on time.

Can there be any better start to the day - than by supplicating to your Creator at the crack of dawn, to the sound of chirping birds (who are also engaged in His praise), and while the rest of the world lies asleep?
I cant think of any.
Alhamdulillah.

Salaam

Mental trick:
Think you are invited by a King and he will reward you with thousands of golden coin, and you will feel if i can wake up for getting that then why not for fajr

Physical:
Put your alarm clock or mobile whichever you are using for alarm away from you,so much away that you can't reach it until you've to put yourself out in order to shut the alarm

AND LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST KEEP IT IN YOUR MIND ITS YOUR BENEFICENT AND MERCIFUL ALLAH'S ORDER.You've to answer for it on day of Judgement.

How to Wake up for Fajr?

by Abu Productive

How do you wake up for fajr? And I don’t mean wake up for a day or two, but how do you keep waking up for fajr, constantly, everyday, without fail.
There’s loads & loads of websites online giving you tips and advice on how to wake up early. But our focus is not on worldly tips (which should be taken by all means, part of tying the camel :D), our focus is on the spiritual means.

My dear brothers/sisters, every day when you read Surat Al-Fatiha, at least 17 times a day, you recite the verse “You Alone we Worship, and You Alone we Seek Help from”: You want to worship Allah? “Yes!” You need His help then. You want to wake up for Fajr? “Yes please!” Guess what, you need Allah. You cannot, I repeat, cannot, wake up for fajr without Allah’s help. Now ask yourself the question, what can I do to show Allah that I truly and utterly want to wake up for fajr?!

Have you ever had days when you’re about to go to sleep, and you have this deep feeling that you’ll definitely wake up for fajr? And have you ever had days when you know for certain that you’ll oversleep? Imagine the two scenarios, which I’m sure some of us have gone through:

Scenario 1:

You feel high with Eman, you’ve prayed your witr, read some Quran, and even though you’ve got 2 hours to sleep till fajr, you’re certain you’ll wake up because you’ve set your mind, heart and body to make sure you wake up. In fact, sometimes you keep on waking in the middle of the night thinking it’s fajr time out of fear that you’re going to miss it. If you haven’t experienced this, think of a time when you had to catch an early flight or a bus/train, and think of how your mind, heart and body were switched on, and it doesn’t matter what time you slept, you’ll wake up.

Scenario 2:

There are days when deep down you really don’t want to wake up, you hope that you “oversleep” so you feel less guilty about it, and Allah may have mercy upon you and still wake you up, and that’s when the battle with the snooze alarm starts and the classic shaytaan trick “just 5 more minutes…” begins.

How do we maintain scenario 1 everyday?

With these 2 scenarios, one details a feeling deep down inside that you’re definitely waking up, and another where you know you won’t wake up because deep down inside you don’t want to and you’re not ready to take the fight against shaytaan of waking up in the morning.

Below I detail some practical and spiritual tools, that will help you in achieving scenario 1 all the time inshaAllah:

Spiritual Tools:

Know who Allah is: This is the key and number one tool to waking up for Fajr. If you know Who you’re worshipping, and you know that He requests that you get up in the morning and pray to Him, you’ll wake up. It’s our lack of understanding of who Allah is that makes us slump into scenario 2 all the time. Know your Lord, that’s key.

Sincerity: Be sincere about waking up for fajr, don’t just say to yourself: “InshaAllah, it’ll be nice if I wake up for fajr” be sincere about it, and say: “I will wake up for fajr” I find it useful sometimes to talk to myself about it before going to sleep and say: “I will wake up for fajr, i don’t care how, but I’ll definitely will!”

Wudu before sleep: Ibn Abbas reported that Allah’s Messenger said: “Purify these bodies and Allah will purify you, for there is no slave who goes to sleep in a state of purity but an Angel spends the night with him, and every time he turns over, [the Angel] says, ‘O Allah! Forgive Your slave, for he went to bed in a state of purity.” Do you think that such a person would be left to oversleep and miss fajr?

Witr Prayer + Dua: Make sure you don’t sleep before performing your witr prayer, and supplicate to Allah during your Witr prayer to help you wake up for Fajr, remember, “You Alone we Worship, and You Alone we Seek help from"

Read some Quran: Ending the day with verses of the Noble Quran will sure put your focus straight on waking up for salaat. Prophet Muhammad used to recommend that we recite Surat Al-Sajdah, and Surat Al-Mulk (Chapters 32 and 67) before going to sleep.

Remember Allah before you go to Sleep: This is part of the first point I made, and you can find all the supplications you need to recite before going to sleep here. You might need to print them off and read them off paper at first, but within a week or two you should be able to memorize them fully and just recite them before dozing off.

Remember the rewards attached to Fajr Salaat: from being safe from being a hypocrite, to having light on the day of judgement, to being under Allah’s protection the whole day, to having laziness removed from us that day and being productive. Remember these rewards and you’ll sure wake up.

Other tools I use that help me a lot:

Ask a friend/family member to wake you up: This is the number one rule for me to wake up. Get a family, friend, spouse to wake up, and help each other, if you get up before them, don’t be selfish and make sure they are awake too.

1.5 hours sleep rule: Aaaah.. here’s a secret trick, there’s a theory in the Sleep science that says that every human being completes an entire sleep cycle in 1.5 hours, therefore, if you can wake up at the end of a multiple of 1.5 hours (e.g. 1.5 hours, or 3 hours, or 4.5 hours..etc) you’ll wake up fresh and rejuvenated. Otherwise, you’ll wake up lazy. So if fajr is at 5am, and you sleep at 12am, make sure you set your alarm at 4.30am, because that gives you 4.5 hours to sleep. (Of course, if you take 1/2 an hour to fall to sleep, you might need to add that into your calculation).

Nap in the afternoon: Another lifehack, taken from the Sunnah and recommended by many, make sure you nap in the afternoon, for just 20 minutes! yup, just 20 minutes. Trust me, for the past 3 years, I’ve mastered the 20 min nap, and everytime it never fails to rejuvenate me. If you need to train yourself to nap for that long, I highly recommend www.pzizz.com, a wonderful software that trains you for these short naps, it’s what I used to train myself.

Promise yourself a grand breakfast if you wake up for Fajr: I’m a breakfast guy, so if I wake up early, I sure like to have a big breakfast. Sometimes i look forward to my breakfast from the afternoon before, and just like a small reward, treat yourself to a massive breakfast in the morning. It’ll definitely set your day straight as well inshaAllah.

The Importance of praying Fajr on time and some tips

Some Warnings About Missing the Fajr Prayer

There are also warnings mentioned regarding missing the Fajr prayer. The Prophet [Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him] said:

“The most burdensome prayers for the hypocrites are ‘Isha and Fajr [AM: because they prefer the comfort of sleep to prayer], but if they only knew what they contain, they would come even if they had to crawl.” [Ahmad]

and

“Whoever prays the dawn prayer [Fajr], then He is under Allah’s protection. So beware, O son of Adam, that Allah doesn’t call you to account for being absent from His protection for any reason.” [Muslim]

If the rewards do not convince us, once we understand the seriousness of going about our day without Allah’s protection around us for the day in which we missed Fajr, that should push us to make every effort to wake up the next morning, and keep trying, until we establish its observance as a habit.

Some Practical Steps to Waking Up

There are many different techniques to try to wake up for Fajr. They vary from person to person, depending on what prevents a person from waking up.

Physical Preparations

There are various physical preparations: 1) winding down before bed and sleeping early, 2) setting multiple alarms out of one’s immediate reach, 3) simplifying one’s bedding, 4) drinking ample water so one is forced to the washroom, or 5)having a family member or friend wake you up when they rise. These are some of the main suggestions, of which sleeping early is perhaps the most common remedy.

Mental Preparations

Then, there are mental preparations: 1) before bed, visualizing oneself rising, washing and praying, 2) telling the mind with firm resolve before bed that there is an important appointment at Fajr that one must attend [with Allah], or 3) warning the mind beforehand that the body will indeed be tempted to close its eyes “for just a few more minutes” when the alarm rings- and not to give in to it.

Spiritual Preparations

Finally, there are the spiritual preparations: 1) filling the heart with the importance and love for praying Fajr and the fear of missing it, 2) begging Allah Most High before bed for the ability to wake up the following morning, 3) a feeling deep-seated regret and sadness if one misses it and immediately making it up, and 4) trying to avoid other major sins in one’s life and repenting from them to try to gain divine assistance [tawfiq].

If one accidentally misses Fajr however, while they should feel regretful, they should never feel despair and hopelessness such that they feel dissuaded from trying to wake up the next morning, since it is a sign that they were relying on themselves, and not on Allah Most High as they should be.

The Reality of Fajr

Few people find it hard to wake up if there is a plane to catch the next morning, or a lucrative job interview. This is because we are so desirous to take that trip or get that job, so our eyes open with vigor when the alarm rings. Some people might awaken even before the alarm, due to their anticipation.

The only reason this does not happen as often for Fajr is because we haven’t attached the same importance to the Hereafter as we have attached to our worldly lives. Our awe and sense of duty to Allah Most High might be weaker than our desire for the ephemeral things around us.

Those who are attached to Allah, however, see Fajr as more important than the rest of the day’s affairs put together, and so they find it easy to rise to worship their Lord, in submission and gratitude. They then find peace from this, which spurs them to rise again, in a positive cycle. Thus, its about breaking bad cycles and establishing good ones.

May Allah Most High make us all among those who rise and pray Fajr easily and consistently, out of submission and gratitude.

my prob is tht i wake up and then go back to sleep :(

Put your alarm clock far away so you have to get out of bed to turn it off. It would be even better if you put it in the bathroom so that your already there to do wudhu! InshaAllah.

Making the intention to get up for Fajr really helps. Sometimes I used to forget and then I would end up sleeping through the time on those days, but Alhamdulillah, now I always try to remember to make the intention.

5. Put on two or even three alarms and put them on 5 minutes apart and put them in places in your room where you know it will be a struggle getting to them. This way you will have to be wide awake to get to the alarms. As there will be three of them this will prevent you going back to bed again.

I do this, lol. It works like a charm, unless I turn them all off and hit the hay.

I used to be so consistent in waking up and going to the Masjid, but now I'm losing my consistency in that. I wake up, but then shut my eyes and drift off into a deep sleep once again. It's hard to put myself to sleep early.

Salam Alaikkum

This is beautiful post Mashallah, maybe no one heard this yet but I find DRINKING LOTS OF WATER A better alarm to wake up in FAJR :) pls try yall

I am not good in FAJR and still working hard on it, May we all succeed

Lol, oh. My house is quite small and you can hear everything from everywhere! And the bathroom is right next to my bedroom.

Maybe put it high up somewhere so you have to get out of bed.

I manage to be up for Fajr but so far (as I am a revert) I seem to keep missing the mid day prayer... :(

salam
jazakallah brother hamza this is very useful for me as my iman is becoming weaker and weaker as i dont read salaah and communicate at the hardest times like fajr
wasalam

Here is another tip which you guys can try. Pardon me if i am mistaken

Push Isyak prayers nearer to your BED TIME. As soon as you finished your prayers, you will be able to sleep easily
as you will feel very calm. Also as soon as you hit the bed, dont forget to read surahs and have a niat to wake up for fajr prayers.
InsyaAllah.

^ What is Isyak Prayers brother Cynosure92 ?
And Jazak Allah Khayr for your advice.:thumbs_up
