It is intended to prepare immigrants for the civics test. The government subjects them to a simplified, highly propagandized version of American history. As a result, many immigrants enter American society with a false sense of utopianism only to be disappointed by the rude awakening of actual life in America.

Some of those are hefty topics that need more justice than a little paragraph like the entry about FDR's new deal.

The guide also misrepresents a few things.

If the person writing this thinks that slavery was not the major issue of the Civil War then they need to relearn their history. If there had been no slavery then there would have been no Civil War. Simple as that.

Most of the other "lessons" in this story are one sided and, as Lynx said, more complex than the author would have you believe.
