What are referrals?

In user profiles, under the statistics tab, there is something called "number of referrals". Some people have zero and some people have quite a few.

What does this mean? I couldn't find it in the FAQ and I also did a search for it.

While registering on the forum, if someone enters your name on the Referrer field then your referrals increase by 1.
