Ibn al-Jawzi narrated that Ibn ‘Aa’ishah said: I said to a doctor who was highly proficient: What is love? He said: The occupation of an empty heart. [Dhamm al-Hawa 290].

its not a hadith, its a statement of the khalaf.

it just intrigued me a bit so i thought i'd share it and unfortunately it doesnt come with an explenation.

Jazakallah Khayr bro, awesome quote.

Whenever I come across narrations that condemn love, then what I've learned is that it helps to know which word in arabic is being used, i.e. which type of love is being condemned..because English is very limited. All they have is the word: "love" and it's supposed to encompass all the different types. Whereas in Arabic there are more than 20 different words for love (probably more). Here's a sample list:

[حب] ‘Hub’ is love
[عشق] ‘ishq’ is love that entwines two people together
[شغف] ‘shaghaf’ is love that nests in the chambers of the heart
[هيام] ‘hayam’ is love that wanders the earth
[تيه] ‘teeh’ is love in which you lose yourself
[ولع] ‘walah’ is love that carries sorrow with it
[صبابة] ‘sababah’ is love that exudes from your pores
[هوى] ‘hawa’ is love that shares its name with ‘air’ and ‘falling’
[غرم] ‘gharam’ is love that is willing to pay the price
'Al 3laaqah' - The Attachment. The first time you see someone and you become attached to them.
'Mawaddah' - is love; desire
'Mayl'- is inclination
'Uboodiyah' (Worhsip). All Prophets of Allah are at this level.
'Khula' (Khaleel) Only Prophet Muhammad and Ibraheem reached this level to love of Allah
'Tatayyuma'. Tatayyum means worship and it is said: tayyama Allaah i.e. he worshipped Allaah.

Pretty amazing isn't it? What an awesome language!

lol very interesting bro !

i think the narration is speaking of love before marriage wallahu a'lam

jazaikhair sis, for the link .its very beneficial. at times i think such answers should be posted on the notice boards of every department in every college , in every home so that we remain guided.

Hmm I understood it a bit differently. From what I understood, it was criticizing the love that is at the level of Ishq (before or after marriage), meaning one that goes beyond the boundaries set by Allaah. I say this because Ibn Jawzi in the same book says: “If you haven’t loved passionately or known the meaning of desire then get up and eat hay for you are nothing but a donkey.” & also “You and the hard rock are equal.”

Allaahu Alam. Have to look at the notes of Fiqh of Love again

Wow! That really is amazing! I don't seem to have the mortal blessings. My beloveds have always died, which is why I wrote the sig banner you see below. Translated, it reads: Love is as strong as Death. Remember me.

I think the best a person can do is love a person for the Sake of Allah and leave a person for the Sake of Allah.

Allah knows best.

Love as said before is of many types, but scholars (as far as I know) usually refer to it in two categories: Hubb & Ishq. Ibn Qayyim differentiated between Hubb and Ishq. He said Hubb was pure and noble love whilst Ishq was a forbidden, transgressing type of love, basically when people lose their senses and intellect, ie when someone would go to forbidden measures to be with the one they love. He says:
“When we speak of rulings of love, we must describe two things. One is optional and one is not. The optional love is what leads to love (eyesight, association, etc.) and this is the love that you have to beware of (for it may lead to unlawful acts.) The non optional love, if it happens by the sudden look, or natural passions that develop, you cannot be blamed for it, but it’s how you react to it that Allah will hold you to accountable for.”
Ibn Jawzi in Dhaamul Hawaa' criticizes ishq. He made a difference between the two types of love. He said that there are those who have kindness in their hearts, and then there are those who don't love at all, which is what the quotes in my last post were referring to. Walaahu 'Alam.
