What's the reason behind these verses?

I was just having a little debate with someone online because they were talking so much crap about islam which really cheesed me! Even thought I'm having doubts about Islam I know its the only true religion so I had to back it up until they posted these verses:

They sound a bit violent but I know there's a reason why Allah brought down these verses so can someone plz tell me what that reason is

read the chapter yourself, for that one line there are several that say something drastically different.. it's easy because it's the same chapter.

...I don't know which chapter...
