In “Al-Fawaa’id” of Imaam ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (d.751H) he cites the following ayaat, in which Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta’aala) says:

“And (remember) Ayyub (Job), when he cried to his Lord: ‘Verily, distress has seized me, and You are the Most Merciful of all those who show mercy’.” (Al-Anbiya 21:83)

He (Imaam ibn Qayyim) then comments on Prophet Ayyub (‘alayhis-sallam) and the exalted characteristics he showed in dealing with his distress and the tremendous qualities he utilised in seeking the removal of his distress, such that he (Imaam ibn Qayyim) said:

“Ayyub (‘alayhis-sallam) combined many elements in his supplication. He inferred the reality of monotheism, expressing his need to Allaah, showing love for Him and longing for Him, acknowledging the Attribute of His Mercy and that He is the Most Merciful among those who show mercy, and being humble in front of Allaah because of His Attributes and by showing his need for Him. Whenever someone is in trouble and finds this feeling in himself, his distress will be removed.”

The stories of the Prophets (may Allaah be pleased with them all) contain so many jewels and gems, so I hope to post more benefits and practical lessons (that we can all implement) from their lives from time to time, if Allaah so wills!
