"When Defense became an Art" an essay by Dahir

Many years ago, before man had rifles and rockets and rough-edged tools, a time when war was just a fight, two men would have a discrepancy--usually over whose camel was prettier--and they would duke it out. Over time, as more petty conflicts took place in the tiny community that was our world, men became more adept and more savvy, they developed better fighting techniques. Later on, verbal persuasion (early politics) came into play and men would work to get others on their side instead of taking on the task of a fight on their own.

As time continued to go on and conflict became a daily part of life, men adopted weapons to their aid. A short period later, fighting had become a totally different event. When a man fought over a camel with another man, they would no longer just duke it out. They would employ the help of other men and the aid of weapons and only after both sides had prepared would they go to war.

So, you see -- when morons like Sun Tzu try explaining what is behind war, do not forget that it is nothing more than a discrepancy between men who are too primitive to use their words to resolve the conflict -- men who use their tongues only to prolong conflict.

I understand what you mean, but realistically people started banding together for protection. There are always those out there that will take what you have through force. Sometimes talking isn't going to work, and your only option is self-defense or pacifism.

I disagree. Many conflict are not simply about a metaphorical camel. Many are about competing ideologies, who wins is highly relevant to all those involved. It determines how society is organized, what laws we have to abide by and who rules and how.

At the end of the day, all of those conflicts are things that can easily be solved through a simple fist fight -- or a compromise...correct?

Na, there are no simple solutions to complex problems created by competing nations.

People are self-destructive.

End of story.

End of thread.

Not really.
