can i say it in the privacy of my own home with a witness? Must the witness be muslim?

i dont know about that, but i would say it's best to do it in a near by mosque as the imam is there and also witnesses.
But mashallah sister, and may allah guide you.

If you where to say the Shahadah with sincerity, from where you are and with no witness except Allaah(swt) you would be as much of a Muslim as any other Muslim in the world.

No need to wait for a witness or until you get to a Mosque. Of course you will want to let the Imaam at the nearest Mosque know you said the Shahadah as soon as possible. He will then most likely ask you if you would like to repeat it in the Mosque. Do not worry about your pronunciation the Imaam will help you as much as needed.

You dont need any witnesses.Just say it and believe what you say.It is between you and Allah.Thats all you need.
and Congratulations.Mashallah.May Allah bless you.

U do not need to go to mosque or witnesses.u can do it now
say al-shahaadatain first, then purify uself for Salat and u can perform ghusl (complete bath) because the prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered some of his companions to perform it when they accepted Islam.Pls pray for me.Allah is pleased with u and u u supplication are answered.
he Shahada can be declared as follows:

"ASH-HADU ANLA ELAHA ILLA-ALLAH WA ASH-HADU ANNA MOHAMMADAN RASUL-ALLAH".

The English translation is:

"I bear witness that there is no deity (none truely to be worshipped) but, Allah, and I bear witness that Mohammad is the messenger of Allah",

However, it would not be sufficient for anyone to only utter this testimony oraly either in private or in public; but rather, he should believe in it by heart with a firm conviction and unshakeable faith. If one is truly sincere and complies with the teachings of Islam in all his life, he will find himself a new born person.
do not delay becoming a muslim for this or any such reason. After you become a muslim, then you are held responsible for learning when and how to do salah and wudu, acting upon the pillars of Islam and faith, and for implementing what you learn, when you learn it.

:sl: Sister Elizabeth,

Mash'Allah!! You are on the right direction. Shahada is the declaration of belief in the Oneness of Allah and in Muhammad (pbuh) as his Messenger.

The Shahadah can be declared as follows:

ASH-HADU ANLA ELAHA ILLA-ALLAH WA ASH-HADU ANNA MOHAMMADAN RASUL-ALLAH”.

The English translation is:

"I bear witness that there is no God except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."

Sister Elizabeth,

I guess we're all eagerly awaiting one particular post from you...the one that tells us that you have become a Muslim and entered the Ummah and family of Islam :D

May Allah make everything so easy for you, we are all rooting for and praying for you. Ameen.

Sooo I can now say As salamu aleiykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh to you all, I gave my shahada today at my work during lunch break, and alhamdulillah, I have a Muslim coworker that was with me. I have a lot to learn especially about the masjid, and all the prophets peace be upon them, but inshallah it will come. :statisfie

I am very happy, as soon as I said my shahada today I felt different. Jazak Allah Khieran for all of your help, you are all beautiful people and I am so happy to become part of the ummah!

Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuhu sis,

OOOOh My Allah!!!!!

SubhaanAllah, I only just noticed on another post of yours in another thread that it said "MUSLIM"

Many many congratulations, I can feel the tears welling up...I wish I was there to hug you, and welcome you personally into Islam!

MaashaAllah. Sister, ask any questions you may have. not sure what Muslim support you've got where you are now, but in case you're wandering what to do next please let us know!

Also, do look at the links I sent you, esp the first one, in the "trials of conversion" thread, which should help when explaining to your parents.

I am soooo happy :statisfie

Assalaamu alaikum.
