The most important ritual of Hajj is standing on the plain of Arafat, which is known as Wuquf-e-Arafat. This ritual takes place on the 9th day of Dhul Hijjah. This amazing event of prayer and reflection is considered the soul of the entire Hajj journey. To highlight the importance of the "Day of Arafah," the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: "Hajj is Arafat." (Sunan an Nasa'i)

On the 9th day of Hajj, pilgrims carry out several tasks. First, pilgrims go to the Plain of Arafat from Mina after sunrise. After reaching the Plain of Arafat, they stand in devotion, often facing the Qiblah, from just after noon until sunset. Moreover, they seek forgiveness, mercy, and guidance from Allah. They also listen to the Khutbah (sermon), which is delivered from Masjid Al-Nimra. Pilgrims combine and shorten the Dhuhr (noon) and the Asr (afternoon) prayers, praying them together at the Dhuhr time. Pilgrims do not leave Arafat until after the sun sets, after which they leave for Mudalifah.

Note: For those Muslims who are not going to Hajj, fasting is highly recommended for the 9th day of Dhul Hijjah. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, "Fasting on the Day of ‘Arafah, I hope, from Allah, expiates the sins of the year before and the year after." (Sunan Ibn Majah)
