In the Holy Qur'an, there are many ayah's saying: Allah is forgiving, merciful, will forgive your sins...easy going overall...

There are also many other ayah's saying Allah will punish you, give you great suffering, be fearing, etc...

So which one is it? I can't decide between fearing Allah, or Loving Allah...Or it has to be both at the same time?

:salamext:

Allah's punishment is severe, but His Mercy overtakes His wrath. He may punish or forgive whichever of His servants whom He wills.

Notice the balance? A Muslim fears Allah's punishment, His Wrath and Anger but he never dispairs on the Mercy and Forgiveness of Allah. This is called 'taqwa' i.e. Fear and Hope, think of them as two wings of a bird. A muslim fears the punishment and rejection of Allah because of the ill deeds that your hands have earned but you never dispair of His forgiveness. One can't attain rightenousness and piety if he takes His forgiveness for granted, nor will he be able to do anything if he thinks he is doomed because of Allahs wrath.

The verses of punishment are a stern warning for mankind to turn to Allah and stick to the straight path, and in turn Allah will turn to you in Forgiveness and a generous reward.
